Sometime in the past few weeks, Avatars on my site stopped updating.

JFBConnect -> Facebook -> Jomsocial

Joomla version: 3.2.3
JFBConnect version: 6.0.5
Jomsocial version: 3.2.0.3
SCLogin version: 4.0.5

When logging in via my Facebook creds, profile avatar is not updated in Jomsocial though I do see it in SCLogin module after logging in. Jomsocial still shows no avatar default picture. I've gone over the configuration six ways from Sunday and can not figure this one out.

Currently using Joomla 3.3.0 | JS 3.2.0.3

(This issue also occurs on Joomla 3.2.3 | JS 3.1.0.4)

When users change their avatar to another pic the change occurs but once the browsing session ends, the next time they log in through their social network connections their avatar reverts back to the previous one. This is NOT a cache issue.

It appears that some sort of integration may be overriding the current avatar with the importing of the profile pic from the connected social profile and I believe I have the settings set so that this should not occur. I am using JCBConnect v6.0.5 and SCLogin v4.0.5 and am notifying JomSocial on the issue as well.

Please take a look.

jchungerford,
In the JFBConnect -> Profiles area, please make sure you have the "Always Import Profile" setting as "No". Otherwise, the user's social network avatar will always be imported when they register. That's my best guess as to what's happening for you, but if that setting is already like that, let me know, and we can investigate further.

Steven,
I have your credentials already (I'm assuming they're still correct) and am planning to investigate this for you tomorrow. There's a few other minor JomSocial issues user's have reported, but they all seem to be specific to them (not widespread). Not sure what's going on, but we're planning to tackle them all tomorrow.

Thanks,
Alex

I just accessed the admin area, deleted the account I had and then re-registered on your site using Facebook. My avatar was properly pulled in. I'm not sure why it worked for me, but it definitely did what was expected.

How are you testing? Are you creating a new user, or just testing with a different FB avatar to see if the one on your site gets overwritten? Are you seeing this with multiple accounts, or just one?

Let us know the steps your taking and we'll gladly test more. I believe something may be wrong.. I'm not calling you crazy.. it's just much harder to diagnose something that's 'working' for us.

Thanks,
Alex

No worries Alex, I'm not taking it that way.

I assumed, an d maybe I am wrong though I seem to remember it doing this, that the avatar was updated from Facebook whenever you changed it on Facebook and logged in to the website using your Facebook creds.

So, this is happening on existing accounts. When I first created my account, many months ago, my avatar was pulled from Facebook. Several times after that I changed my avatar on Facebook and it got updated on the website. Within the past month or so, it has stopped doping that. I've deleted my avatar on m,y website profile and then logged out and logged back in and I get no avatar at all. I've uploaded an avatar to my profile and then logged out and back in and did not get the updated Facebook avatar. Currently this only appears to be affecting my account but I am not sure.

Am I doing something wrong or expecting incorrect behavior of the component?

Hi Alex,

My issue is fixed. Thanks for pointing me into the right direction. While I had profile import OFF in the joomla tab, I failed to notice the jomsocial tab where it was still on.

I hope I didn't waste too much of your time on this one.

Thanks for providing A+ support! :)

Any progress on figuring out why my system is not updating Avatars in Jomsocial?

Steven,
I'm really not sure what's happening here. I just re-registered on your site. My current Facebook avatar was pulled in, as expected and mentioned above. I then logged out of your site, went to Facebook.com and updated my avatar there. When I re-logged back in to your site, my new avatar was pulled in, as expected.

We simply can't recreate this issue. Can you tell me:
1) Can you recreate this with multiple accounts, or is it one specific Facebook account?
2) If you try to register from a Facebook account, is the avatar imported correctly during registration? We use the same methods to import the photo on register and login, but it's possible a file permission on your existing avatar is set in such a way that the login import isn't being allowed to overwrite the existing one.
3) If there's any steps you can provide that seem to work consistently from at least 2 accounts, that would help (browser, OS, updating the photo, only on registration, etc).

Let me know, and we'll gladly help to investigate further. Sorry you're having issues, but it's simply not something we can recreate.. which makes it very difficult to diagnose and correct. Knowing how widespread the problem is with the above information will greatly help.

Thanks,
Alex
