It is a great feature, and you should be able to use it. Almost all sites should use gzip compression and there are many, many, many sites powered by JFBConnect that use it, including this one. You'll need to investigate how GZip compression is being performed on your server and see if there's a known issue with it. Usually, GZip is done through the Apache deflate module. I'd contact your host and see if that's up-to-date or if there are other known issues with your configuration that may be causing this.

I'm glad we got to the bottom of it, and I hope you get a solution that works for you.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi,

Gzip works well in my other joomla 3 website using the same JReview + JFbconnect version danhgia.net
So I guess the gzip issue is not related to server side?

Thanks,
Giang Anh

I'm honestly not sure what's causing that issue. There's only one other user's site that we've heard that issue from. We simply don't have enough information to know where things are wrong.

Gzip can be performed in different ways within Joomla depending on what your server reports as being available options. So, it could be that Joomla is gzip'ing differently on one site vs the other sites. That could be a change in the .htaccess file or the VPS configuration for that specific site, but that's specific to your configuration.

I really don't know what the problem is, but we'll be keeping an eye out for other users reporting this in the future so that we can investigate further with more data.

The only thing I'm confident in is that the problem doesn't seem to be JFBConnect related in any way.

I hope that helps, explain or help you investigate, even if there aren't any great answers there.

Thanks,
Alex

I too have to have gzip turned off in Joomla 3.2 for Facebook to be able to read opengraph information. I turned off all JFBC extensions and the problem persists, so somethign is up with Joomla 3.2 and gzip.

Thanks for the information. We do have a task to look into the issue, just to understand what is going on. As you noted, it's not something in JFBConnect, but something we'd still like to understand and be able to provide a fix for, if possible.

We'll let you know what we find.

Thanks,
Alex

Is there any news Alex?
I updated my other site to Joomla 3.2 and the issue happens also. So I guess it's related to Joomal 3.2.

Thanks,
Giang Anh

Giang,
We haven't yet. There's been enough other issues in Joomla 3.2.0 that have kept us busy that we haven't been able to investigate this one yet. We also have only heard of it from a few users, so it (likely) isn't widespread. That doesn't mean we won't be investigating, just that it's not the number 1 priority since there is a work around and the issue doesn't seem to be directly related to JFBConnect.

We're releasing JFBConnect v5.2.2 over the next few days with some fixes for multiple issue and Joomla 3.2.1 should be out in about a week (we think). After that, if the issue is still present, we'll definitely be narrowing down what's going wrong.

I hope that helps answer your question, even if we don't have a perfect answer yet.

Thanks,
Alex
