Topic-icon Development request to incorporate Strava

I'd like to submit a request to incorporate Strava into a future version of JFBConnect. I would particularly like to see it implemented in the social streams functionality as well as social sign in.

Regards

David,
We had an email from another user recently for Strava support as well. Their name was David too, but from a different email address. I'm not sure if that was you or not.. but I'll respond to them and let them know about this post.

Here's the response I made to that general question:

We are evaluating multiple other social networks for integration in the future. Unfortunately Strava is not on our current investigation list as it’s a lot more niche-y than we’re looking for. A product for pulling activities data for a user would be a much more specialized product and more difficult to integrate into JFBConnect than one of the more standard “social networks” that we currently support, or will be soon.

As for Strava, I honestly hadn't heard of it before that request. I did a little research, but not enough to know as much as I'm sure you do. If you can give me any more information on:
a) What you'd use it for on your site
b) What features it has that would be neat for general integration
c) Any features that are similar to what is already in JFBConnect (single sign-on, 'widgets', social stream abilities, etc)
d) Anything else really neat you like about Strava
Any of that information will help us understand better how it could be used, and why we should work on that development. There are tons of 'secondary' social networks after the primary ones we've already integrated. Github is a prime example as a niche network that we're willing to incorporate into JFBConnect. If you can provide good information on how it would be a good fit.. especially with c) above, where it's similar to what we already have (which makes development easier and also doesn't take us off on some weird development course), you *may* be able to convince us.

There's no guarantees though, and we have a bit on our plates right now, but we're always listening.

Of course, if anyone else reads this, and has interest, let us know!

Thanks,
Alex

Hope this helps persuade you to investigate its potential further:

a) I help run a website for a group of mountain bikers. We use Strava to show a collective and individual feed of the daily rides that people have undertaken.

b) Feed of general ride statistics (distance, route taken, person/s etc)

c) Single sign on and social stream. They already have some widgets that we've incorporated into the frontpage of our site as well as peoples individual signatures on the Kunena forum we have running. One of the best things about Strava is the segments you can set on a route, it's always a challenge to see how you compare against other Strava users as well as your own personal records. A lot of people strive to be the fastest and set a KOM (King of the Mountain). The Strava app instantly notifies others if they've been knocked off the top spot. It also holds leaderboards of all the segment times.

d) Strava is probably the most popular cycling and running tracking app out there with a massive user base.

Awesome. Thanks for the details. We asked our resident athlete around here about Strava. She's never actually used it, but seen posts from friends on Facebook and other places about it. She also said it looks sweet and she'd probably look into actually using it going forward.

I added it as an investigation point for our 6.2 release. That's not a guarantee it will be in that, or any, release, but it's the next step for us before it can make it in. As with all new social network integration, we generally start with the social authentication abilities and profile import. From there, we add the widgets and channels, depending on difficulty and requests from users.

Thanks again for your suggestion, and feel free to point out anything else that's worth looking into with Strava or any other network!

Alex
