I have just renewed my subscription to JFBConnect.

I am slightly unhappy with the extension and it has not been working properly on my site all year. So I have decided to renew and try hard to get all the issues fixed, and if I can't resolve them I will require a refund.

My first issue is:

When I like my page using the like button module my page is not displayed to my friends, the permission is set at 'only me' and not 'public' how do I change this so that when users like my page it is shared publicly and not just to the user who likes the page? This is not something that I have set on my own FB page in the settings.

Thanks

I'm sorry you've had troubles with JFBConnect over the last year. I just looked through all your past posts and they all seemed to be resolved. If you've been having issues, or have any more in the future, please make sure to get in touch. We can't help you if we don't know about what troubles you're having.

As to your Like question, there's a few things to be aware of on how a Like is published.
* There is a Privacy setting of "Who can see your future Posts" that is settable by all users in their profile settings. Until recently, that was set to "Public" by default. Recently, for new accounts, that setting is Friends Only by default. This means that less Likes may show up in public streams for your site.
* There is *no* control that JFBConnect has over the privacy status of a Like click. It's the user's own privacy settings that choose this. Otherwise, the settings of a user would be overridden.
* Facebook is steadily moving toward a more-private mode by default. Some of this is due to privacy gaffs in the past. Other reasons are simply to make free publicity hard as they want you to pay to promote your site/page/app on Facebook.

In general, I'd suggest trying from different accounts with different settings and from ones that have authenticated on your site and ones that haven't. I think you'll see that it's all in the privacy settings of the user, but if you see differently, definitely let us know.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi

Well I wondered if it was the individual privacy settings. But I have tested it using my account and my privacy settings are for 'public' and the like still appears as 'only me'

So not sure what else it could be?

I'm not sure either. We'll have to do some more testing to see what we can do.

One thing I'd recommend trying is going to the Configuration -> Facebook section of JFBConnect. In the "Additional Permissions Request" box, add "publish_actions". That is the permission Facebook requires to post activity on a user's behalf. I didn't think this was necessary for the Like button, but it may be something Facebook is doing now when a user has authenticated on your site.

If that's the case, then new users that authenticate on your site will see the new permission, but their Like's will show up in their public Timeline.

Users that don't authenticate, but still click the Like button should have their Like shown publicly based on their privacy setting.

That's a guess, but your testing and feedback will help.

Thanks,
Alex
