Topic-icon Default permissions for "like"

10 years 7 months ago #36752 by chramb1
When using the "like" button for content, clicking on it brings up the dialog whereby a user can enter extra text and post that to their Facebook timeline. There is no dropdown in that dialog for permission, and all posts seem to default to "friends only."

I'd like, if not a dropdown, to default this to public.

Guidance?

There's no way to do that with the default Like box. What you could do though is create a custom Like button using our Open Graph Actions integration. The action type is built-in to Facebook and called 'og.likes'. We have a Open Graph Actions configuration guide that could help with that.

You wouldn't need to create anything in your Facebook Application, so just skip to the Action/Object creation in Joomla. You can use the og.likes on any type of Object, so create your objects however you want. Then add the {JFBCAction id=xx text=I like this} tag wherever you want the button to display.

The main reason this may be beneficial is that you can set the Explicitly Shared option in the action (both in your Facebook App and the Action in JFBConnect). With that, Facebook should give the action a lot more weight and (from what they say) it should be shown prominently in their Timeline.

I hope that gives you an idea to investigate, but if you have any comments or feedback, let me know.

Thanks,
Alex

Looks like if you use the built-in "like" in this way, you get explicitly-shared automatically. I submitted my "like" for approval and got a response that it wasn't necessary and was already auto-approved because it's a built-in.

It even works with any object I create as long as og:type is properly set on the page.

So we're good here.

Good tip. We honestly hadn't tested much with the og.likes feature (obviously). We'll be putting together some example configuration images and steps for some of the more common actions (some require approval, some require them to be created in Facebook, etc), so we'd like to have some easy things for users to look at. We'll keep this in mind when we create the page for built-in Like.

Thanks for the feedback, and as always, if you have any comments on the Actions, or anything else, let us know. We're always trying to look for ways to make them a) more powerful and b) easier to use.
