The lockdown has found me sitting in front of a computer again and out of boredom, I am updating my cricket website (it was either this or gardening).

Anyhow I have renewed my subscription for JFBConnect but found both Facebook and Google have very much changed their interface in the 5 years since I first starting using your excellent product. However I note that your YouTube video "JFBConnect Initial Installation and Basic Configuration" is still the same I viewed back in 2016 and is dated 23 June 2015.

I appreciate that documentation is updated regularly but it would also be extremely useful to be view a video demonstration that is current.

Your Google instructions are a little out of date too.

When you have enabled Google People API, you are taken to the Overview page for that API which does not have "OAuth consent screen" as a submenu option.

You are correct that our video instructions are woefully out of date. We've attempted to update them in the past but each social network changes their configuration area so frequently, it's proven to be futile to try. Keeping text instructions with pictures up to date is much simpler. Creating, editing and putting the touches on a video takes a considerable effort and while in the middle of doing specific ones in the past, the whole interface was redone, throwing out our work.

We will likely just take the videos down as the text tutorials, pictures and autotune suffice for most users.

I hope that helps explain, even if it's not a great answer to your question.

Thanks,
Alex

I wouldn't take the videos down just yet as they are still reasonably helpful.

One thing that users might find useful is have to sub-sections on the forum per social network. That way, users can document changes to the APIs and interfaces so if anyone gets stuck with a particular network, there is a resource of information.

Just like to say that JFBConnect is still a great product and managed to get the social logins (for Google & Facebook) up and running in just over a couple of hours. In fact I feel that Joomla is going through something of a small renaissance due to the release of 3.7 and it's support for custom fields. I have decided to rebuild my website just using Joomla content and the power of custom fields means I can now store/display opening times and use them as a filter which is something I couldn't do before.

I'm glad the videos still provide some help. That's definitely part of the reason we've kept them up.. but redoing them is in order.

Your suggestion for separate forums for each network is a good one. With JFBConnect v9, we're going to go to one forum for JFBConnect (instead of one for Joomla 3.x and one for 4.x, like we did with 2.x and 3.x). Having sub-forums for groups of products is good. I can see breaking out the major networks, like Facebook and Twitter. Some others may go into a catch all category as they are less used.. but I agree it could be beneficial for those searching through posts. Thanks for the idea. Sounds easy now :)

As for Joomla in general, we agree! We recently moved from a 3rd party blog system to Joomla's core with custom fields. Another site we built uses custom fields extensively and other extensions are using them as well now. We're planning a feature to use custom fields for Open Graph tags as well, which should be easier to manage.

With 4.0 coming out later this year, I think there's some other positive things coming. It's a good upgrade and modernization overall. Not revolutionary, but a big step up.

Thanks again for your feedback and don't hesitate to reach out with any other suggestions!

Thanks,
Alex
