missing possible Facebook plugins

The User - JFBConnect and Authentication - JFBConnect plugins should have been installed automatically with JFBConnect. We use to have plugins with the names you mention above, but that was years ago. I think you may have found some incredibly old documentation.

Please look for those 2 plugins and enable them and you should be good. If you can't find them, I'd recommend re-installing the JFBConnect zip file which will double-check and re-install things for you.

Also I'm not sure what the feature is called - but I would like to remove it from visibility. Currently when logged in it shows up in the lower left corner. and features buttons (social meta, preview, create post and post activity). How do I remove this?

That's the 'Social Toolbar'. It only shows to admins of your site, not to guests or registered users. You can disable it in the JFBConnect -> Configuration area.
