In the backend of your site, the Joomla update manager should detect that an update is available when you search for available updates. From there you should be able to start the installation. The fact that you let your subscription lapse slightly won't affect the upgrade. But yes, that is the manual process to start the upgrade.
Just to state, we always suggest that you do a backup of your site first before any installation
