However, if I click on a link that prompts me to log in for access reasons (simple limits here, just public vs registered), i.e. it brings up the login page, logging in from there always redirects me to the user profile page, and doesn't redirect to same page. I would like it to.
Unfortunately, this isn't something we have control over. You mention above that "it brings up the login page". That's a redirection to the core Joomla login page, not the SCLogin module. Our settings don't work for that page.
Now, the redirection should work on the Joomla login page, so that is something that can be investigated. To do so, I'd recommend:
* Disabling any SEF extensions or options you have enabled
* Disable any caching you have enabled
Try again. If that works, re-enable each of those slowly and test to see which is the cause.
