We are posting things directly on our FB page, but JFBC code is getting inserted into the posts somehow. We are using the JFBCLike box as well as comments and like and share button on our website. What would be causing this?

You can see what I am talking about in the pic below.

The web site is at www.herald-citizen.com (scroll to the bottom right to see the box). And our FB page is at www.facebook.com/heraldcitizen

We are using JFBConnect 6.2.2 on Joomla 2.5.9

Thanks.

It looks like JFBConnect is having a hard time figuring out a reasonable value for the og:description tag.

Here are some suggestions:
1. Enable our 'Open Graph - Content' plugin. When enabled, JFBConnect can attempt to get the description from the text of your article.
2. Explicitly add an SCOpenGraph tag to your page to add a description. For example {SCOpenGraph description=Get your news here}
3. Set a default description in our JFBConnect > Open Graph > Configuration > Defaults setting
4. If none of the above are set, JFBConnect attempts to use the meta description from your page. However, in your case there is no meta description set. You can add this when editing your article in the backend or in the Joomla Global Configuration area to set a site-wide description.

I hope this gets you started, but let me know if the above suggestions don't fix your issue.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

I have enabled the Open Graph - Content plugin
I put a default description in the JFBConnect > Open Graph > Configuration > Defaults setting
And added a global meta-description.

Should the current things posted be fixed, or will this only affect future posts? Because changing the above did not do anything to things already posted.

Thanks for your help.

To add to that...

By putting a default description in, it DID fix the problem if someone shares the story, but does not fix the problem in the Like Box. How can I get that description to appear in the Like box?

If you go to the Facebook Open Graph Debugger (developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object/), you can fetch new scrape information. I did that for the URL you provided, and the description is now "Herald-Citizen, Cookeville, TN".

You can also use our page (socialdebug.com/), which also scrapes the page again. Running it through that, there is a warning that your description is not long enough. Facebook recommends >75 characters for descriptions.

Since I re-scraped that URL www.herald-citizen.com/ please try it again to see if it resolves your post preview issue.

Yes, the description is correct if the page is SHARED, but it does not fix the stories in the like box. I will post a new story and see if it fixes future posts. It looks like once the stories are posted, they will stay like that in the like box. But if someone shares them, then the default description will be used.

Thanks.

Looks like we're cross-posting. I was responding to your previous post just now

By putting a default description in, it DID fix the problem if someone shares the story, but does not fix the problem in the Like Box. How can I get that description to appear in the Like box?

Since the posts in question are already posted, Facebook does not allow you to change the og:description tags and have that reflected on the post. After about a week or so, Facebook may re-scrape the pages and automatically update those descriptions. Looking at your FB page, it seems that you've been having this problem for months, so it may take FB a longer time to re-scrape. However, that's not something that we have control over.

Yes, the description is correct if the page is SHARED, but it does not fix the stories in the like box. I will post a new story and see if it fixes future posts. It looks like once the stories are posted, they will stay like that in the like box. But if someone shares them, then the default description will be used.

If the steps you took did resolve the issue for new posts, at least going forward, they will be correct. So please let me know if that parts get resolved.

I had a reporter try and post a story, and he said the code is still showing up and he cannot edit it or remove it. I have attached a screen shot.

That page hasn't been re-scraped by Facebook yet, which is why the old tags are showing. If you go to the following URL for the scraper and that page, you should see:
developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/o...ders-try-to-separate

For me, I see:

Time Scraped 22 hours ago

The description below is still showing the incorrect value.

If you click the "Fetch New Scrape Information" button, it should re-check your page and get the new, updated and fixed. Then, that should start working for new posts and, eventually update existing posts.

I hope that helps explain,
Alex
