I have a facebook app which posts on users timeline. I want to insert my site's homepage in the post on facebook timeline.
I have tried the {SCOpenGraph description=https://mysite.com} tag. When I check the meta tags it gets inserted there but doesn't show up in posts on facebook.

Can you explain more about "I have a facebook app which posts on users timeline." How is the post occuring? Are you linking that post to the home page, or another page on your site? Can you run your home page through the Facebook URL Debug Tool and test that the Open Graph tags appear as you want?
