Topic-icon JFBConnect Facebook Like (recommend) button and subdomains

Hi all,
Here is what I have going on, and this has to be something VERY simple that I am just missing. First, I am a subscriber under the username eagleone. If you need the ID I will provide it.

I am running Joomla 2.5 latest release. I am using the latest JFBConnect.

The sub domain is radio.ourplace-sites.com, which maps to directory joomla16

The JFBConnect locates the facebook app OK and recommends radio.ourplace-sites.com and all checks out OK.

If you enter radio.ourplace-sites.com the LIKE fails.
BUT
If I enter www.ourplace-sites.com/joomla16 the LIKE works.

I assume it is a domain setup issue that JFBConnect is not liking, but for the life of me it appears all setting are as they should be for a subdomain...

Let me know what information you require and we will go from there

Thanks
brian

Can you explain more how to recreate? I just went to the sub-domain you noted and clicked the "Recommend" button in the right sidebar, and it seemed to work.

What are you doing? When do you see something 'fail'? Do you see an error message or anything else that would be good to help narrow things down?

Thanks,
Alex

If you go to radio.ourplace-sites.com and click on LIKE (recommend) you will not get the "comment/post" to facebook pop up, and it will not post anything to facebook. You also see a bogus count of 197 in the counter

if you go to www.ourplace-sites.com/joomla16 directly (rather than the sub-domain above) ir will pop up the "comment/post" correctly, and will post properly into facebook. you will see a correct count in the counter

That is the process to recreate the issue. It must be associated with how JFBConnect "sees" a sub-domain.
Hope that explains better!
Let me know, I am working on it as we speak...

Brian

P.S: just double and triple checked the facebook app, it is set correctly for a domain of ourplace-sites.com and the proper site URL of radio.ourplace-sites.com.

So why does www.ourplace-sites.com/joomla16 work, and the "correct" subdomain URL radio.ourplace-sites.com (pointing at the joomla16 directory) not allow the execution of the application to produce the comment/post window and then post to facebook???

Not sure currently what more info to post to help you out....

Well, after deleting and reinstalling the Facebook connect multiple times, and re installing the app on facebook here is where I ended up:

1. If I use the valid subdomain address at radio.ourplace-sites.com I finally got it to post the LIKE (recommend) to facebook
2. BUT, the counter is still bogus, it shows 197, it should read 1
3. if I use the direct address of www.ourplace-sites.com/joomla16/ I can post AND the counter is correct.

So really all I need (I guess) is why the counter is wrong when using the subdomain address of radio.ourplace-sites.com which points at the joomla16 directory.

Thats it for now...

Brian,
Earlier when I tested, I hit the Recommend button in the sidebar and the comment box properly appeared. I'm not sure if uninstalling/reinstalling would have had an effect on that. It may have simply be a caching or update issue on Facebook's end.

Generally speaking, JFBConnect doesn't care about subdomain vs root domain. JFBConnect will simply choose the URL of the current page and assign Like's to that page.

So, with all that said, the Like count for radio.ourplace-sites.com/ and www.ourplace-sites.com/joomla16/ will be different. It will depend on when/where the user clicked the Like button. If they did it on the sub-domain page, that is where the count will be applied to. If you want, you can 'force' the URL to always be for the subdomain by using the JFBCLike parameters. Then, even on the /joomla16 page, the count will show for the subdomain. I believe your subdomain truly has 198 Like's.. that's a good thing.

Finally, you can try the Facebook Like configuration tool and test yourself. Put both URLs in the box and you'll see the different counts. It's not a JFBConnect thing, it's a Facebook thing.

Hope that helps explain, but if not, let us know,
Alex

Thanks for the fast response,

I will troubleshoot this through the Facebook people. The count cannot be 197 as this is the first time I used FBConnect on this URL, and it was only in production
maybe 15-20 seconds before i noticed the count was wrong. I have read that Facebook has major issues with their Social Apps on their end.

Thanks Alex, If I have any more info after talking to Facebook, I may post again.

Take care

Not sure why the count would be that wrong then. The only things that I could thing of is if you had another page (like your /joomla16 URL) that has a canonical or og:url tag which would 'redirect' Likes to the new page. That's not how it always works, but it's possible.

However, looking at the joomla16 page, or the subdomain page, I don't see anything like that that would be redirecting counts or pulling them in from another URL.

Definitely let us know if you make any progress with Facebook, and I hope you get a resolution. The Like button does seem to work. If the post in a user's Feed looks correct, you may just be lucky somehow to have an extra 196 Likes. I know it's confusing, but that's the optimistic way to look at it :)

Best of luck,
Alex
