I knew what I was getting myself in for having read various horror stories about CSS max-width...and was lucky to have avoided it...until Friday. A perfect green-lights-across-the-board installation of JFBConnect 4.2.3 (no Profile Integrations) on Joomla 2.5.4, PHP 5.3 & Rockettheme Voxel 1.2 with Mission Control Admin template was not a bad start. Data started coming through almost immediately after I ran the linter tool on my site clubvibe.co.za and everything looked good. BUT when I changed the width of the module, this happened:

of course, the bad guy in this story is Facebook's refusal to fix the max-width function in their CSS,

and look how pretty it looks when a little checkbox is unchecked:

Now my question - surely this has happened to someone else and there is a solution? Or is that type of wishful thinking not going to help me today?

Thanks in advance,

Andre

500 views on this problem and not even a single comment? I guess there's no solution then...

Andre,
We try to be very fast for posts, and 5 hours isn't an overly long time to wait we hope. We do not use post views as a way to prioritize responses though, we simply response to posts as we get to them and we scour the forums multiple times daily for the fastest responses possible.

As for your issue, unfortunately, that max-width is set by Facebook itself. The entire JFBCFan / Like Box widget is loaded through an iFrame. By HTML standards, it's not possible to overwrite the CSS code of content displayed inside of an iFrame because 'bad' things can be done if you can completely frame another sites content and change the overall look with ease.

Facebook used to have a way that you could include your own CSS stylesheet in the Fan box. However, they removed that ability over 2 years ago because it was abused to where the content could be made to look like it wasn't even from Facebook's site.

There's simply no way we can fix this. It's a bug on Facebook's end if you set the box that large and there's simply no way to override those styles.

Sorry for the inconvenience. If there's anything else we can help with, we gladly will, but this is just one of those things you'll need to work around by not using such a large Fanbox or ensuring that the images you upload to your page have a good proportional width that will work with a max-width 120px setting.

I'm glad to hear everything else with JFBConnect has gone smoothly. Where we can fix things, we gladly do. If there's anything else we can help clarify, just let us know.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex - my comments re: losing a weekend and 500 views was meant to be humorous and not in a negative way at all - I just couldn't understand how such a trivial issue could cause so much trouble. Shameful conduct from Facebook, but lets hope they fix it sometime soon. If I have any problems with JFBConnect I will come here immediately - your support is just as good as JED rates it. Thank you for a great product!

Andre,
When any user starts off saying that they wasted a weekend, we always err on the side of caution (ie, the user is *angry*). That's even moreso in the case of a problem we have no solution for.. all we can do is explain.

Glad to hear you're happy with JFBConnect, and our support though.. and we agree, there are definitely some areas of Facebook integration that are rough around the edges. We do everything we can to shield our users from those rough spots, but there's only so much we can hide. In general, they provide a great interface and a lot of stuff to work with, so it's worth the effort.. but when you find a point of failure, it can really hurt!

Anyways, should you need anything else, just let us know! We'll be here!

Thanks,
Alex
