How to move a site? was created by colin
How to move a site?
say for example from a dev server to production

there doesnt appear to be any way to drop or change the exisiting config.
Except I can update fb credentials but nothing else. autotune seems to hang on the old site stuff (url, domains etc) for grim death and there's no delete button!

my only option seems to be a un/reinstall which is a bit brutal

Colin,
What do you want to move? Just the configuration settings, or the whole site? Just like Joomla content, and many other extensions, there really isn't a built-in way to 'transfer' data from one Joomla database to another.

I really don't know what you mean by "drop or change the existing config". Is this after you move to a new site, or is this simply changing settings on the development site? Obviously, you should be able to change the settings for either your Facebook App (through Autotune) or in the Configuration area of JFBConnect without issue. However, once set, there's no way to easily copy those settings to a new site. You can re-use a App ID and Secret Key, but you'll want to run Autotune again, or configure the App manually, for the new Site URL and Domain settings of the new site.

Finally, for Autotune, I'm not sure what you mean by it hanging..? You can change the settings within it and hit "Update Settings". If that is not working for some reason, definitely let us know. The settings can also be manually set at developers.facebook.com/apps

Hope that all helps, but definitely let us know any feedback you may have!

Thanks,
Alex

So ok if I got the wrong answer its quite probably because I asked the wrong question ;-)

I'll try again:
I havent used FB apps to any extent previously.
I want to move a site from: test.localhost
to a staging server: test.example.com

I didnt find any docs that work thru this, so...
I assumed I needed to make a new fb app for the new site - which I did
I changed AppID and Secret to new app credentials in the JFBConnect>config>Facebook API screen

alzander wrote: I really don't know what you mean by "drop or change the existing config"

Well I meant: delete or change the existing configuration settings within JFBConnect
The purpose being to move site from a localhost server to a staging server

alzander wrote: I'm not sure what you mean by it hanging

I didnt actually say hanging, but sorry bit of a typo there:

colin wrote: autotune seems to hang on the old site stuff (url, domains etc)

My meaning was that JFBConnect 'hangs on to'(=retains) the old configuration settings

I say that because there appears to be no way to get the url and domains to change in jfbc - in the 'overview' screen Site URL and domains are as per the localhost settings
And altho I changed AppID and Secret in the JFBConnect>config>Facebook API screen, Autotune will only come up with the old localhost AppID/Secret
I also notice that JFBConnect Extension checks 'Available' settings all come back as 'unknown' . I assume jfbc is 'phoning home' for this info and since this is on a live box with full network access - it should work?

But on the other hand, FB appears to know what is going on because a comments box appears on front end with the correct appid

So there you go. Thats a bit long for a simple question:
How to (re)configure JFBConnect when moving a site from: test.localhost to a staging server: test.example.com ?

Colin,
Sounds like you got most of it going be enabling curl.. hopefully everything. Some notes:
1) The Autotune landing page does check for curl being enabled. We can probably make that more clear, even on the main Overview page.
2) If you go to the Facebook App section of Autotune, and hit 'Refresh', it will re-pull information about your App from Facebook and update the recommendations for your current site. That will also update the Overview page. I can imagine that adding a check on the Overview page or somewhere else to try to detect that you're on a different site. Not sure how easy that would be, without causing other problems, but we can look into it.
3) The Site URL is not something that Facebook let's us set to 'blank' programmatically. Once set, it can only be changed. Since it's required for Facebook Connect functionality, we didn't really want to work around it.. so you'll just need to change that value, not 'empty' it.

Hope that all helps explain, but if you're still running into issues or have any questions, let me know!

Thanks,
Alex

No problem for the help! Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here, but if you run into anything else, just let us know.

After you've gotten real comfortable with JFBConnect, please consider leaving a rating and review on the Joomla Extension Directory for it or our support. It's certainly not required, but very appreciated!
