First, great product. I love having the ability to have this conversation with someone who has created a viable Joomla Facebook connect solution.

Where I am at right now:

Joomla 1.7

I created an app, configured it correctly--now I am creating a reveal page.

I have the reveal page here:

www.doogledesign.com/our-story/facebook-page-test.html

When you go to our Facebook page, you have to select the app to see the reveal page:

www.facebook.com/DoogleDesign

Also, the reveal page on Facebook looks very different. Is this because I need to only use classes from the template I linked to? Also it says 'Article' at the top--that must be something I missed.

Thanks,

Joe

Ok, now I am just trying to figure out the styling, I got the app to show up by default.

So, the reveal page seems to strip much of the styling. Why is that?

So, ok--update. I had to go into the com_content folder to change some text. I use a YooTheme template and I build all my pages with Zoo (com_zoo) from YooTheme as well. I am not sure if that played into why the text "Articles" was being displayed in the reveal page or if there is something that needs to be changed on your end.

Anyways, this is the file I changed:
components/com_content/views/article/view.html.php
on line 172 I removed the text info to look like:
$this->params->def('page_heading', JText::_(''));
That got rid of the pesky "Articles" that was showing up. After that, I decided to give up on getting the reveal page to display css from my template, so the page I settled on is based off of images in divs. It suits our purpose just fine. I am glad it worked out in the end.

If you have any advice on how to get CSS from a linked template to render in the reveal page that would be helpful.

Thanks

Joe,
By default, for the reveal pages, we use a component. To see this yourself, you can add &template=component onto the query string of the article your trying to show to see it on your live site. For example, our demo reveal page uses article ID 33, and the URL is:

www.sourcecoast.com/jfbconnect/index.php...tmpl=component&id=33

We honestly haven't played with Zoo much, so not sure what happens when you use the tmpl parameter in that view, but it does usually strip out a bit of CSS from the 'main' template. Hopefully, playing with this view will help you see better the final result and manipulate the CSS as necessary.

Let us know if you need more help or aren't sure of something, and glad you're liking JFBConnect!

Thanks Alexander. That makes sense. I think it really was a learning experience for me. I basically took a template and stripped it down to nothing for my tab page. Then I loaded in the images I needed and a form and linked from there. It worked out great! If you would like to see the finished page, take a look here:

www.facebook.com/DoogleDesign

You will see the reveal page--like it, then you should be directed to the canvas tab page.

I am quite proud. ;)

Do you have a showcase for those who have made canvas pages? I would love to see what other people do.

That looks great! Kicks our Reveal page example to the curb :) We really need to get a designer.. that's why we focus on more 'functional' extensions, instead of ones that require templates!

We don't have a showcase site yet. It's something that's in the early planning stages now, and we're hoping to get something up later this year or early next. I've definitely taken note of your page, as you should be proud, and we'd love to show it off as an example!

When we do, we'll definitely send out a 'call for designs' and get some up. We may start a short-list of some pages in the mean time instead of a larger site (just to get started), and if we do, we'll get yours in there.

Hope everything else with JFBConnect has gone smoothly, and should you need anything else, don't hesitate to contact us. And, finally, please consider leaving a rating and review on the Joomla Extension Directory for JFBConnect, or our support. It's certainly not required, but very appreciated!

Good luck, and let us know any other great things you do with JFBConnect!

I will visit the JED for sure. I used to use this product when it first came in conjunction with JomSocial--both were in their early stages of development back then. I am glad to see how you have continued to provide excellent support and how you have actively developed your product. You have a great thing going here. Glad I came back.

As for the showcase sites, you could simply make a category in the forum for site showcases and if you really wanted to have sub categories for types of showcases--K2, JomSocial, Community Builder, Canvas Pages, etc.

I find it helpful as a guy who really enjoys designing to look at what others are doing as a source of inspiration and guidance.

Thanks for the kind words too. :D

Joe,
Don't thank us for the kind words, the page is really good looking. We really aren't designers, and don't have one on staff... so we're always impressed when we see good designs, especially using JFBConnect.

We love hearing from our really old users. JFBConnect was a bit haphazzard in it's early days for multiple reasons (not our main focus, not a good Facebook API to 'connect' with, not a good business or support model, etc). All those things have changed (for the better), and it's always good to hear our early users still using (or coming back to) JFBConnect.

There's definitely a few different ways to do a showcase site, but we've learned in the past to wait a while and 'do it right' instead of just getting something up. The 'quick' methods hang around way longer than they should and push off the 'right' way. Ideally, we'd create a directory or something else with tags and other features. Nothing crazy, but there's enough good directory extensions out there for Joomla that we'd prefer to use that over our forums. We definitely realize the need for it, as it helps provide guidance as to what can be done and is a good sales point for us.. so it will happen.. and hopefully in the next few months. I know that doesn't help you now though.

Anyways, good luck with your site, and definitely let us know if you need anything else,
Alex

Hey Alexander,

So, I have been looking around at some other fan pages and wanted to pick your brain to see how to accomplish somethings that I see. For instance, on some band pages--you will notice that the wall is available on an app landing page, also an option to view their twitter feed. Any direction on how to accomplish one or both?

I was thinking that perhaps one of the plugins from your extension could be used to render the wall feed on a joomla page and simply canvas that into the facebook page. I dunno.

Thanks,

Joe

Joe,
If you have an example page to show us, that always helps.

However, with that said, you should be able to use the JFBCFan module, or {JFBCFan} tag, to insert the recent posts from you wall onto the page. You can disable the header and faces so pretty much all that shows is the wall posts/stream.

If that's not what you're looking for, or I'm missing something, just let me know!
