Do you have any intention to develop a component similar to your JFBConnect but for use with Google Login?

We do, but don't have any announced timelines right now. Google has some authentication ability, but they have not released an API for Google+, their new social networking platform, yet. It's expected that they will unveil an API, similar to what is available for Facebook that we use, in the next month or so.

We're currently investigating connect-type extensions for Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+, and will likely have a survey soon to gauge what our user's have the most interest in us developing first.

Thanks,
Alex

Interesting. Google+ shows a lot of potential. Are you likely to add social bookmarks to go with it e.g. the +1 button (same as Facebooks, "like" button).

Here's my two cents from a long term subscriber...

I mainly use this extension for the modules and plugins these days. FB Connect functions are few and far between.

I'm pretty much over the "Make My Site the Next Facebook" thing so the log in functionality although awesome is limited in its effectiveness overall unless the site is providing something "In Addition" to features that facebook already provides. That's up to the site admins, not sourcecoast!

That said, log in with facebook is integral to many sites along with all of the social graph add ins and SourceCoast does it better than anyone. Hence the long term subscriber bit. :-)

Features that I'd like with the content /social plug in to see are as follows:

A "tweet me" Option
A "Follow Me" Option
Google +1 for articles
Google Add To Circle for whatever flavor profile (Low on the list of priorities as of now.)

For the Upcoming Facebook Pages Add in.
I'd really like the entire thing modeled after FB Tabs for Wordpress from Carr Communications. (I can send a link if you want it)
With a special emphasis on the show different pages to likes and not likes pages layout.
I have many more thoughts on this and will send them separately to Alex, but you get my point.
The entire thing may be better served as a component but I'm not a developer.

For J 1.6/7
Registration with Facebook Connect- adding of fields direct to Joomla (minus CB or JS) since they are now extensible.
This may already be a feature but I am personally waiting for 1.7 to really dig into the upgrade. (As noted in another post somewhere in the forums)

Cheers,

Rich

Thanks all for the feedback, suggestions, and interest. We've been doing Facebook for quite a while now, and while we plan to continue adding great new features, we're definitely going to be adding other social networks to our arsenal in the future, so your feedback definitely helps.

Google+ really is interesting to us, there's no doubt. However, the only thing we can do with it right now is the +1 button. We're hoping they open up the full API soon, which they've stated is coming, but without it, it's impossible to add users to circles, login to sites, or do a lot of the other things that would be very cool. So, for now, we can't even investigate Google+ much more than a "it would be neat" since we don't know what the API will actually let us do.

I'll definitely agree that making the next Facebook on your site isn't the best idea for everyone. However, the login functionality is still one of our most popular features, though the social features are very close behind. On this site, for example, we don't use the social aspects much (though will be adding them more after the 4.0 release), whereas the login feature is integral to our experience. Getting users in to subscribe as quickly as possible is important to us as well as on many other sites.

With that said, the 4.0 release has been rejigged a little to make development of other social integration extensions easier on us by sharing some code. When we make more, they will be in addition to JFBConnect, not a part of it simply due to the additional development and support that would be required. Pricing is unknown, and sharing and integration between them all would definitely be made as seamless as possible, as we always try for ease of use with our extensions.

As to what we'd work on next, we're planning to have a 4.0 pre-release newsletter going out this week which will have a survey attached asking what our users would like to see next: Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+. From that, we'll be deciding what to focus on next, which will be started shortly after the 4.0 release.

Finally, Rich, I found the FB Tabs plugin you mentioned, and think we have most of their features covered. Basically, our Page integration will have the ability to show a specific article from your site to user's who haven't like the page and it will be shown with no other menus or other things on it, so if you don't have a link in the article, the user won't be able to navigate away. Once the user likes the page, then your normal Facebook Tab URL will be shown, which is another page of your site. 4.0 also has the ability to use different templates for your site based on whether your page is viewed in a Facebook Page or Canvas, so you should have a good amount of flexibility to change the look of your site when viewed in Facebook. I'm sure that once 4.0 is released, there will be suggestions for improvements, but this will be a very good start.

Hope this all helps with our direction, and as always, feedback welcome!

I am thinking about disabling my Community Builder!
I sitll haven't been able to figure out how to "build" the community yet and I am concerned that, currently, it disrupts the JFBC process by adding extra required fields.
I previously tried installing JomSocial (which was nice) but it was littered with bugs.

So, my question is:
Now that we can integrate facbook and hopefully google+ (soon) ... most of the key "Web2" features are now covered and perhaps CB is superfluous for my needs (i.e. registering, commenting on content, interacting with eachother and purchasing).
The only thing I haven't been able to figure out is how can/could users interact with eachother, e.g. chatting (safely), to practice languages - which is what the site is about. Also, it seems to me that an integration of Joomla and Google+ pages would offer a lot of value for website users / learners.

Has anyone else had similar thoughts on this topic? Have we had any clues about what google+ could offer us?
Thanks!
Neal

p.s. I don't want to discredit community builder or jomsocial, I was only thinking about making our users' interaction with the website content as seamless, intuitive and appropriate as possible...

Neal,
I understand what you're looking for, and unfortunately, JFBConnect, JLinked (our new LinkedIn package) or even an upgrading Google+ extension (first half of next year) isn't completely meant for user interaction on your site. We focus on connecting your site to the 'big' social networks. This is for enhanced registration/login capabilities and the all of the social interactions between your site and the social network.

For on-site user-to-user engagement, you'd need a different extension to accomplish that. We really believe in doing specific things and doing them right, which is why we focus on the link between your sites and the social networks. We could try to build our social extensions into another JomSocial or Community Builder, but we think it's best to simply integrate with those (and other) on-site social extensions. There's plenty of ways out there to add forums, chat capabilities and whatever else you're looking for, and things like the FB Comment box or Livestream modules can also help. However, that's the power (and curse) of Joomla.. lots of extensions to choose from and some can be overkill (JS and CB many times).

Hope that explains, while not giving many great alternatives. I'd recommend looking into chat-specific or other collaboration extensions, instead of the social extensions (JS/CB) that you've tried before. Building a site with more, targetted extensions, has generally worked better for us as you get more features you want and less 'fluff' that you'll never use.

Xaser/All,
We just released our LinkedIn integration extension, JLinked, last week. We haven't done much promotion for it yet, that's coming in a few weeks while we get a lot of feedback from our early adopters (which has all been positive so far). We'll be working on merging code more and making integration between the 2 even tighter over the next few months, and then, as Google opens up the API for it's social network, we'll be investigating and implementing that hopefully around March/April of 2012. Currently, their API is still very limited and not meant for production, so we couldn't release anything on it yet anyways.. but we're definitely keeping any eye out.

Good luck,
Alex

Thanks Alex for the response! Helped a lot to clarify my thoughts and I'll investigate what the users' needs are and, perhaps, if they are in fact quite content with what JFBC currently offers.
I also agree with the point above: no need to recreate facebook.
Also, it's good to hear about the G+ timeline. I suspect that, by the time we get to March, there'll be a substantial user base on G+.
Thanks and keep up the good work,
Neal
