No problem about being a rookie
I'm assuming you put in the API Key, App ID, and Secret key into the Facebook API tab in the configuration area of JFBConnect? If so, also try, in that section, to disable the SSL validation. That may be causing a problem with communicating with Facebook.
Finally, if you believe it's setup correctly, try simply logging in using Facebook (on the front end) to see what happens. If you get an error there, it may help us diagnose the issue further.
