You should definitely use the version that is meant for Joomla 1.6. Unfortunately, I just realized that we had not updated our XML file which is checked for the most recent version, which is why you were seeing Unknown, even if you had the plugin installed.
With that updated, the version checker should show the proper current version and you should be good to go. Please install the latest Kunena plugin for 1.6 (included in JFBConnect download area), publish it, and check the Profiles section of JFBConnect and configure it there. It should work as expected, but if not, just let us know!
