Topic-icon NEED FEEDBACK: Obtaining Status Permissions from Users

Support Specialist
Quick background: With version 2.5.x of JFBConnect, a site admin is now able to post status messages to a user's profile. Currently, we only ask for a user's permission to do this when they originally sign in with their Facebook credentials. This causes problems in the following cases:
* If you've been using JFBConnect for a while, you're 'old' users will never be asked for permission and they'll likely never have updates posted to their profile
* If, when a new user is asked, they deny permission, they'll never be asked again.

This is our initial idea on how to improve on this system to ensure we ask for user permissions, without being overly zealous and annoying to the users:

We have a few ideas on how to get previous FBConnect users to have status updates work as well. We can add the same permission check into the Login module to where if you haven't given permission to the app, it will ask on login. However, that would mean that people who don't want to allow it will be pestered a bit.

The plan we have is to add another column to the usermap table to note whenever a user has been asked for permission. Once they've been asked, regardless of they're choice, they won't be automatically asked again.

In addition to this, we'll be creating a module which will display permissions to users to allow them to opt-in or out of permissions that you'd want on your site.

Love to hear anyone's thoughts on this.

I like the SourceCoast approach. It would be nice if the user could change the permissions any time they want from our app. It would also be nice if they don't allow that we ask again every time they do something we want to post. Lots of sites do this. I personally would also like to offer a way to completely turn it off but we dont want it to be too obviou how to turn it completely off!! <!-- s;-) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";-)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;-) -->

not a big fan of this. when users delete a stream message from facebook, they have the option to block your application from pushing any further updates to FB. however, if they then come back to my site any want to do the sort of stuff that normally auto-publishes to the FB stream, they should at least have the option to allow that again. so my favorite by far is to always ask if we don't have the permission. if they really hate it, they'll probably just update their status on the FB site itself - no problem :)

Hi:

I upgraded to 2.5.3 exactly for the auto-stream. But now I have 600+ users that uses facebook connect and they are not publishing what they are doing at my site. I would love to have a chance to ask them if they want to auto-stream somewhere in my site.

I think if you can give us a code-snipplet on how to ask for permission and we can probably find the best location in our site that allows us to ask the user. Every site is different and if I have the code-snipplet, I can optimize it on my site.

Also, what about customization of the module? Can I pay you guys to do this?

Thanks.

Albert,

We have already made changes to JFBConnect to add two fields to the User Map table to allow you to request permission again the next time the user logs in. We are still in the testing phase, but if you want me to send you a beta copy to test out on your dev site, just PM me your email and I can send it. We should be putting out an official release soon once we have done enough testing.

What kind of module customization are you looking for? If it's something others can use, we can try to add it and make it available for everyone. No need to pay us to do it :D

Hi:

I will wait until you have finished testing. I am still thinking on what else to do with facebook connect in order to fully maximize it. I will let you know my requirements once I have thought it through.

I am not sure whether you have access to information on whether a user declined or accepted a auto-stream request. If you can put another column on the user_maps and let us know how successful we are with the auto-stream approval, that will help us a lot!

Thanks.

We do have access to that and I think that's a good idea. I will put it on the list for the next release.

Hi:

When do you think you will have the next version? I am willing to beta test it for you. I think I have sent you a PM, but no response yet. I will do that again.
