Free upgrades? was created by nevnorris
Hi,

I'm considering purchasing your JFBConnect component. Can you answer two questions:

1. Does this purchase offer free upgrades as you add more features?
2. Do you plan to add JomSocial functionality any time soon? I'm trying to decide whether I should purchase your component, or wait for JomSocial to do their own.
3. Does the component allow the functionality for new postings (in my case, reviews via JReviews) to be sent to a user's Facebook wall/feed?

Thanks,

Matt

1) Yes, any feature upgrades to JFBConnect will be released to users who have purchased the component. v2.0 (RC1) was just released which is our first step to adding a lot of the user creation and automatic logging in features that users requested over the 1.0 Version, and any of those users can now see this (and future 2.0 releases) in their download section.

A caveat to this is Joomla 1.6, which adds a lot of user management features. Depending on the effort to re-work the component to work with that, a version for J1.6 may be a separate release.

So, in short, feature upgrades will be free to current customers for the foreseeable future. Support will always be available for our past works though.

2) It's on the radar. After a stable release of 2.0 which allows Joomla user creation and automatic Facebook log-ins, we plan to work on whatever features are requested. Currently, JomSocial people seem to be the most vocal :) Suggestions are welcome.

3) Not yet. We have some test modules we've created and another author we're working with to generate new features (such as status updates and more profile integration), but no announcements yet.

I also need Facebook Connect to work with JReviews. Let me know if you plan to add this soon.

The issue with getting JFBC to work with other extensions (including JReviews) is how the user would configure it. Do you have any suggestions on how you would want it to work? Keep in mind that it would be great if it was generic enough to configure for any extension but not so confusing that it's impossible to use. Perhaps you've come across other extensions that have done something similar to what you expect.

Thanks for the help and input!

My thought would be that if they login through Facebook Connect, then they post a new listing or a new review - they would have an update posted to their wall on Facebook.

Something like:

Jill Sanders just added a listing on Site Name entitled <a href="tolisting">Listing Title</a>.

or

Jill Sanders just added a new <a href="toreview">review</a> on Site Name for Listing Title. She gives it x stars.

They wouldn't need to configure anything within the FB plugin - it could just always be set as described above & if they wanted to delete them from their wall on Facebook, they're free to do so.

I'm not sure what level of development experience you have, so let me know if any of this does not make sense.

When you post a comment with JComments (or perform another action in Joomla!), the code that gets executed belongs to those components or core Joomla!. There are a few ways to tie in to core or extension functionality using plugins, but not all extensions support a plugin system. It would be possible to do what you are asking by changing the JComments code, but that is called a "hack" and is a bad approach because then you can't upgrade your component later, etc. Another option would be to work with the JComments developers to have them help implement a plugin system (if one doesn't already exist). If there is another option out there that doesn't require getting other developers to change their extensions and doesn't require users to "hack" their site, that is the solution we would want to use.

I will talk to my co-workers and see if we think we can come up with an easy way to do what you want. It may be tricky, but at least we can get something going and then decide if it makes sense to contact other developers or make specialized extensions.

Thanks again for your input. I will post back here when we have an answer for you.

JReviews offers the ability to create add-ons for it and/or do all your component modifications in a folder that overrides the base component folder but does not get overwritten when you upgrade to a newer version of the plugin. It is a very well thought-out solution.

This link will explain...

We created a sticky post to the Setup Instructions and Common Support Questions:

Another developer had responded in a previous post with PHP code for posting to a user's wall:

Let me know this will work for you.

Thanks.
