Hi there, just discovered a weird facebook 'feature'. When as an admin you disallow a comment using the moderation features that come up with the comment boxes, it still shows on your website to the commenter, and anybody that is friends with them.

I've double checked the steps, here they are. Attach the comment box to an article, set it all up, log out from facebook, someone else (or you as someone else to test) logs in to facebook, posts a comment. You as the admin logs in, moderates and click 'Hide'. The comment is gone you think.

But when the person who made the comment logs in to facebook, goes to your site, the comment is still visible. Okay, seem reasonable maybe, but here is the problem....any friend of the commenter can see the comment on the website too, even though it has been hidden.

Am I right, or is there an easy way to fix this? The only way I can see is an email from the admin to the website admin asking for the comment box to be disallowed and so removing the whole thread. Seems the only way, but how else?

This is Facebook's behavior. They basically have a precedence of importance and overrides. A user can always see their posts. A user's friends can always see their posts, because their friends are believed to trust their opinions, regardless of if that speech may not be wanted by the site owner. However, the site owner can hide that comment from anyone not connected to that user's friends.

The way Facebook describes moderation on their site is not "published" or "deleted" but "visible to everyone" or "has limited visibility". When you hide it from your site, you're simply putting it into the "has limited visibility" category.

Hope that explains. Their reasoning does make sense in a way that a site admin can't delete someone else's comment or shield their view from their own friends, while still having the ability to hide it from most users of a site.

Thanks for the reply. Needed to realise that before going live. I decided the JFBC notification feature and ability to selectively switch off comments from an article gives good control. Adds up to a pretty good sytem!

Yeah, overall, the Facebook comments are nice overall. There are definitely some tradeoffs, but in general, worth the benefits (posts back to Facebook, no spam, easy interface, etc).

Glad to hear you like it overall. Certainly if you have any suggestions, we love to hear them!

Thanks,
Alex
