Is there a mechanism to allow a new user to choose their own user name when registering for the first time using their facebook credentials, in a JFBConnect implementation that is configured for Facebook User Only user creation?

No, there's no way to do that. With the "Full Joomla User" option, that field and the password are all that can be shown, so we don't have any 'in-between' mode to do what you're looking for.

Hope that explains, with the 2 different modes, we have both 'quick/automated' and 'user-involved' covered, and it's your choice to determine the best way that will work for your site.
