Displaying message "You must update your password..." etc etc.

Hey there.
Regarding the default/custom message; How exactly does this get output to the joomla page (in this case: com_user, view: user, layout: form).
I realize it eventually passes the argument using the joomla $app->redirect() function, but we are not able to view the message (default or otherwise) anywhere in the document.
What are we missing?

Solved my own problem. Our template was missing the system messages jdoc include.
