align avatar on left breaks width and blocking

I'm trying to get the avatar on the left and yet maintain and neat block for greeting and buttons.
I've managed to get the image on the left using
span3 in the module class suffixbut i can't get a 10px right padding .
if I change the span from 3 to 4 it does position everything but then provides too much right margin.
its important that this stay responsive.
when not logged in everything is fine with span left to 0 as default.
so, bottom line is, no matter what I try, short of modifying the module code itself, I don't know how to get a nice inline block.
