Your original issue involved the proper loading of CSS files in the jms2win environment. The last message discusses our otpcheck.php file. That file is *only* used if you have 2 factor authentication enabled on your site. It's a file that's called over AJAX and not loaded by Joomla directly, which is why we have to include some Joomla core files.

As for your question, again, your path system seems at odds with what's done by Joomla normally. If you're using 2 Factor Authentication and the authentication isn't occuring properly due to the AJAX check, your code fix above may be the right solution. I still don't fully understand your setup, so I can't be sure. It does seem like we skip the check for a defines.php overwrite in the root. To my knowledge, very few sites use that and the overrides really aren't critical for what we're trying to do in that file.

If you are seeing a Javascript error when submitting the login form though, let us know. I'm not sure if this is really related to your original CSS issue though.
