That information should be stored the same way in JFBConnect v2.5 or 3.x. The only thing I can think of that may be the problem is that the jfbconnect_config table wasn't created using the UTF-8 character set. JFBConnect creates its tables using the default character set and collation defined for your MySQL database.
You'll need to check what the character set is for our tables and make sure they are set to UTF-8. From what you describe above, it looks like they are set for latin characters.
There are tools for Joomla to check tables and update the character set (like Akeeba Admin Tools) as well as ways to check using direct queries.
