We're looking into this. Your description above is very helpful as we've had another report that we weren't fully able to determine the cause. Knowing that there's a specific thumbnail image that we may not be importing properly is very, very useful. In the past, we know the avatar has worked properly for other aspects of CB (and 3rd party extensions as mentioned in the post below), but it's always possible something changed that we missed.
We'll let you know what we find and should have something this upcoming week if all goes well.
