Sometimes the Facebook "Like" and "Share" buttons don't display on the page. I have cleared all known caches and re-scraped the page with Facebook's Object Debugger several times. This is an article where the Facebook "Like" and "Share" buttons don't display: www.911truthoutreach.org/557-news-releas...cy-book-summary.html , This is the article where the buttons do display: www.911truthoutreach.org/557-news-releas...the-south-tower.html

I also am not seeing anything posted on Facebook when "Liking" an article, I see in the Facebook activity log where the "Like" and attendant comment has been logged, but nowhere where most people would be looking is anything displayed. Do I need to add a category to the "Likes" tag? I don't see any parameter in the Graph API Reference under either Object-Comments or Object-Likes for adding a category to the "Like" button. The Object Type is set to "article" but the "Like" types in Face book are are Movies, TV Shows, Music, Books, Sports and Events.

And one last thing, it would be nice to have a JCE editor plugin where these tags could be added via a form.

The Easy Tags are very very nice because I can add a lot of detailed information about each article, but having them in the form of an editor plugin where I just have to fill in the relevant fields would greatly reduce the prospect of typos and the need to visit the Facebook Object Debugger.

Actually I found something that allows me to set og and twitter tags on a per URI basis.

This part of the question is important to me. I see that on the old Facebook Wall, that likes would end up appearing in the timeline. I just don't see where they show up now.

I also am not seeing anything posted on Facebook when "Liking" an article, I see in the Facebook "Activity Log" where the "Like" and attendant comment has been logged, but nowhere where most people would be looking is anything displayed. The Object Type is set to "article" but the "Like" types in Face book are are Movies, TV Shows, Music, Books, Sports and Events, as if people don't read any more.

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm unsure why the button isn't displaying. Facebook itself isn't showing anything in the button area. The plugin *is* loading and Facebook *is* replacing the HTML tag that we normally put on the page. However, it's just an empty iFrame that they're replacing the tag with. You can see it in this image:
File Attachment:

The only suggestion I can give to try is to, temporarily, disable JCH Optimize and test again. There's a lot of Javascript that's being compressed which could be breaking or changing Facebook's behavior on that page.

I also am not seeing anything posted on Facebook when "Liking" an article, I see in the Facebook activity log where the "Like" and attendant comment has been logged, but nowhere where most people would be looking is anything displayed. Do I need to add a category to the "Likes" tag?

The Activity Log is where everything goes. There's no method to force a Like to post on a user's Timeline. That determination is done by Facebook's own algorithms to decide how Like's propagate. More Likes and users with similar interests will see the Likes more. Beyond the timeline, Likes can show up in the friend 'ticker' and other places that Facebook shows a user's activity.

A user themselves can use the globe icon in the Activity Log to force something to show on their timeline, but that's up to a user completely.

Setting the category for the page other than Article won't change the prominence of a Like in any way that I'm aware of.

I hope that helps answer your questions. I'll try to look further into why the Like button isn't showing there, but it may be something that needs to be submitted to Facebook as a bug.

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks Alex, I will try your suggestions, but my hunch is that it is something that is happening on Facebook's end because the tags are the same for every article and this article about Anthrax is the only article where the Facebook buttons don't display. I have purged JotCache and JCHOptimize several times hoping that is was something in the aggregation of the JavaScript that was causing the problem, but every time all the other articles displayed the Facebook buttons but the Anthrax article didn't. That article was a very good article, by the way, that was written by a very distinguished professor, so it isn't something of a defamatory nature. I also re-scraped the page several times after purging JotCache, JCHOptimize and the CloudFlare CDN's cache and still nothing changed; something about that article. Oh yes I cleared the JFBConnect Cache as well in each of those processes.

Still will try disabling the system Cache, JotCache, JCHOptimize and JFBConnect and the CloudFlare CDN as well and see what happens after re-enabling JFBConnect and purging CloudFlare's cache a second time to boot.

I agree the tags look right. Even Facebook is parsing the tags.. they're just not responding with any data for some reason. As for all the caching things, I'd recommend disabling all of those extensions, rescraping and then trying again. Clearing their caches likely won't fix the issue immediately since I'm assuming the caches have reset a few times on their own since you originally posted.

Other than that though, I really don't have any suggestions other than submitting a bug report to Facebook themselves asking what may be wrong since there's nothing obvious. You can submit a bug below:

Thanks,
Alex

I have disabled all the caches, JCHOptimize, CloudFlare several times and I waited an hour to make sure that all of CloudFlare's regional servers registered the fact that CloudFlare was disabled. Actually I am not sure if CloudlFlare has regional DNS servers as well as regional web servers, but I wanted to wait just to be sure that requests to our domain were being routed to our CloudAccess server in Chicago and not to a regional CloudFlare server.

Still the Facebook buttons were absent, meaning the div was empty.

Yeah.. only suggestion from here is to ask Facebook as to why. There's nothing else we can do on that page since the tags are rendered and the Facebook Javascript is properly detecting those tags.

Keep us posted on anything you find. We're curious to hear what the cause turns out to be.

Thanks,
Alex

I made a bug report, but I couldn't include the URL to the page without their parser saying that I was including profanity.

I suggested that they re-write their parser.

I couldn't provide them any details without my description of the issue getting rejected.

Ahh, well that probably explains it. If Facebook thinks your website / URL is profane, they apparently won't show the Like buttons for it. Keep us posted if they get back to you.

Yes but this article is written by a very distinguished professor and I know his character and the way he speaks and writes and he is very careful not to offend anyone.

I think the word that Facebook is designating as profane is Anthrax because the article is about weaponized Anthrax. That is the only word in the article that could in any way be construed as profane.

This would suggest to me that Facebook isn't just hunting for things that are profane, but also for things that they believe people shouldn't be discussing.

I had to remove hard core porn that managed to find it's way onto our timeline the other day because, I guess, Facebook didn't think hard core porn was profane or something that should be discouraged.

This further suggests to me that Facebook is beginning to make decisions about what can and cannot be discussed on Facebook based on political correctness rather than being something that is in bad taste. This is very troubling to me.
