Topic-icon Switch from JomSocial FBConnect goes to Re-registration

Hi there

I am using JomSocial 1.8's default Facebook Connect and have had many users register using it.

I installed JFBConnect, configured it, enabled all JFBConnect plugins, and replaced all jomSocial login modules, etc.

Now, when an exising users, who registered using the JomSocial Facebook connect, clicks on the JFBConnect 'Login With Facebook' button, they are redirected to the JFBC reigstration page in which it asks if they are a new user or an existing user. Since JomSocial doesn't give FB users a password, they cannot enter it in this page's form - therefore they cannot log in at all without creating a new account!!!

I am using the same Facebook application so all permissions have already been granted, and the workflow after the switch to JFBConnect should be that users can login as usual using the FB button.

I have had to switch back to the default Facebook Connect of JomSocial for now so that users can log in.

Please advise!

Thanks and kind regards,
Gilan

There's 2 options that are available to you right now.. one's imperfect, but should hopefully help get you going. The other's much more solid, but isn't available yet.
1) Try enabling the "Automatically Link Facebook Users by Email:". This setting, when enabled, will perform a check at login through Facebook. This check will see if a user with the same email address as the Facebook user already exists on your site. If so, their account will automatically be mapped to this account. Since JomSocial imports the email address from Facebook, and we look at this same address when someone logs in, this should fix the issue you're seeing where JFBConnect 'thinks' its a new user.
2) In JFBConnect 3.1, we're investigating a method to import previous connections from JomSocial. This should definitely fix your problem, but unfortunately, 3.1 isn't quite finished yet (though it's getting there).

Hope this helps give you some options. If your confused, or have any other questions, don't hesitate to let us know. Sorry for the troubles!

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex

Thanks for the feedback.

JomSocial does pull users' email from Facebook, however it pulls it into a form and the user can then change the address. When I registered on my own site I used a different email address than my facebook one.

So, although that is probably still the best solution right now, I still cannot use it since I have over a thousand users, of which many use facebook connect, and I can't create login issues for any of them who decided to use a differnt email address, as I'm sure you can understand!

What is the estimated release date of a version which will fix this issue? Until such time it is my belief that JFBConnect (which I really like) is actually practically unusable by JomSocial websites which have started off by using JS Facebook Connect.

Looking forward to your feedback,

Gilan

We're still looking at it getting out this month. That's already delayed, unfortunately, but there's a lot of development and testing that goes into each release, so we don't give exact dates for release.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I just extended your subscription by an additional month for the trouble, just so you know. Not fun subscribing to something you can't use. Hope that helps, and we'll definitely be announcing to the world when the new release is available.

Alex,

Thanks for letting me know.

Yes it is never fun paying for something which cannot be used. I do appreciate the month extension of my subscription to help compensate for this issue.

I look forward to the new version so that I can start using JFBConnect on my site.

Thanks and kind regards

Happy News Year. May 2011 be filled with health, wealth and happiness.

Any update on the new version as mentioned in this thread?

Warm regards,

We actually have 3.1 running on this site currently. We're 'taking our own dogfood' as we always do by running it on our site first to make sure there are no major gotchas. Got it up this morning, and are putting just a few final touches together (updated configuration guide, etc). The new version should be uploaded for subscribers on Wednesday.

In the new version, we're moving to a plugin system for profile integration. When you install the new component, you'll want to install/enable the JomSocial profile plugin as well. Then, in the component UserMap area, there will be a button for "Importing Connections" which will transfer connections from JomSocial over to JFBConnect. We've tested it quite a bit internally, and it's pretty straightfoward how it works. The only thing we haven't tested with is on a site with huge amounts of users. Do you know, roughly, how many connections you'll be importing?

These instructions will hopefully be captured pretty well in the revised configuration guide too, don't worry if the above doesn't make too much sense without pretty pictures as a guide :)

Thanks for the well-wishes, as well as your patience.

Alex

Wonderful, I'm really looking forward to using FBConnect on my site.

I'd have it a guess that my site has between 500 - 600 Facebook users...

Warm regards

That shouldn't be a problem for the method we did. The worry is that with a huge number you may get a timeout or some other issue, but I don't think under a thousand should be a problem.

Still shooting for Wed (or sooner if things go smoothly). Thanks!
