Can be that what you mentioned here
about the double btn, is/was the cause of this "bug": [9.0.244 Issues] Login / Register Buttons

No, this case is only when "Text Link" is selected for the "Show Forgot Username" and "Show Forgot Password" options. I just installed that template on my test site for the other forum post and will respond there.
