Alezander,

I've been moving along with development of my site and I'm wondering how easy it is to integrate jLinked, JFBConnect and the Joomla native registration using email as the username and then linking accounts should a user come in through one of the other logins. I see that you have implemented something like this on your site. do you have any suggestions on how best to accomplish this? I'd appreciate any guidance you can give.

Regards,

John Whelan

John,
Not exactly sure what you mean with the integration. You want the user's email address to be their username as well? With JLinked, it's not possible (yet) to get the email address about the user.. they have to fill it in themselves. Facebook can auto-import email though. Using that as the username can be done pretty easily in JFBConnect.. or you can just autocreate them an account. With LinkedIn it's easy to hide the username field and just have them fill out email.. and then use that for email and username fields.

As for linking existing accounts created through Joomla or any of the other social networks, both of our extension have a "Login" area that can 'connect' their social network credentials to an existing Joomla user account.

Hope that helps explain. It's sort of the high-level generic answer, but hopefully gets you started. If you have more specifics, just let me know!

Thanks,
Alex

Alex,

I've been following some of the other threads and see that LinkedIn has made some changes to their API recently. I was going to upgrade to jLinked v1.2.3, but saw you mentioned that 1.3 was coming out shortly.

Questions:
1) Do you know if the user's email address can now be imported from LinkedIn? It would make registration a breeze.
2) Does jLinked need to be updated manually by reinstalling the extension?
3) Do jLinked and FBConnect automatically sync accounts if the user uses the same email address with both?

JW,
v1.3 is coming out within a week. Maybe this weekend, maybe early next week, but soon.

1) Yes! Email can now be imported from LinkedIn. v1.3 will now pre-fill the email field on the registration page with an option to hide it altogether (so the user can't edit it).
2) To update, you just re-install the component. We do have an update tool built in that you can find on the Admin Overview page which you can use as well. However, it won't update all the add-ons (modules/plugins, etc), so those would have to be done manually.
3) JFBConnect has the option to auto-link users with the same email address. That feature will be in JLinked v2.0, coming out likely in late October or November.

v2.0 will also include the auto-account creation feature that JFBConnect has. That will make it so a username and password is automatically generated for the user and no forms are required. We'd love to get that into the v1.3 release, but basically just want to get something out that supports the new features as quickly as possible.

One big caveat with all this is that there seems to be a bug with older LinkedIn apps... they can't request the permission to users on login to assert that your app is allowed to see their email. This is a bug on LinkedIn's end, and we're waiting to see how it pans out. New apps are fine, old ones are not. Annoying, but hopefully will be fixed soon!

Hope that helps,
Alex
