Topic-icon The connection process for registered users

I have lots of registered users. I am using Community Builder. I may not be seeing the full functionality of the extension - I am having some issues with the security on the server I am using.

Could you advise on the following:

1) When a registered user who is logged on clicks on InConnect - if their CB username and password is different from their LinkedIn ones, how does the system deal with this?
2) What happens if a registered user changes his password in LinkedIn after they have Inconnected?
3) When do the mapped fields in CB update? Is it a) on creation of a registration; b) at InConnecting; c) every time they login d) some other time?

Hopefully, all the answers are below, but if you have other questions, just let us know.

1) CB username/pass different than LinkedIn - This is completely expected, and is almost always the case. It's really simple actually. When a user logs in through LinkedIn, they are assigned a unique User Id from LinkedIn to use on your site. JLinked 'maps' this user to a corresponding Joomla user. Then, we just know that the User ID from LinkedIn is always associated with a specific Joomla user, and we take care of all the 'connection' stuff in the background.
If your user already has an account on your site, and you just added JLinked, when the user clicks the Login With LinkedIn button, they'll have the option of creating a new Joomla account or logging in with their existing account and effectively 'mapping' the two to each other.
As a side-note, we (JLinked) has no way of actually seeing the user's LinkedIn email address or password.. so we wouldn't even know if their username and/or password is the same between your site and LinkedIn.

2) Nothing. LinkedIn will still return the same unique ID for that user, and JLinked will know what Joomla user is associated with that ID.

3) Great you found the answer you were looking for. Should you need more info, just let us know.

Hope that all helps, and good luck!

This all worked well as soon as I realised that my facebook and linkedin accounts were already signed in.

I wonder whether a flow chart showing how the connection process works (and it does!) would help people like me who are too slow to work out what is going on... :)

We know what you mean. :) There was - a lot - of testing and though that went into all the different possible flows of registration, logging in, re-connecting, etc. in addition to the different possible registration modes of JFBConnect.

I wouldn't be surprised if we try to spell out the different combinations of functionality in the future.. JLinked is still very new (we haven't promoted it at all yet.. that's starting very soon), so right now, we're mainly getting feedback like this from our users to determine what could be improved in both features and documentation.

If there are any specifics that you're still not sure about, definitely let us know, and I can try to clarify now. Either way though, thanks again for the feedback, testing, and confirmation that it does all work as we anticipated. So far, we haven't heard of any big issues (1.0.1 did fix a few minor issues), so in general, we're pretty happy with the foundation of JLinked to start growing it from here. Obviously, JFBConnect is already very solid, with more features to come in the 4.1 release later this month.

Thanks again, and good luck,
Alex
