Topic-icon Why does LinkedIn login requires the user to register?

I selected to skip the Joomla! activation and I don't want to have any kind of registration, but...
Thanks for signing in using LinkedIn. Do you already have an account on this site, or would you like to create one?
Either I don't get it or the extension is not actually working as alternative to the registration?!?

The more I am looking at it, the more I don't get it. What is this extension doing actually? There is no way to sign in with LinkedIn account. You always need to then create an account, which makes the whole process meaningless?!?

When I am reading:

No more long registration forms to get the information you need.

I really don't expect someone to need to register when using it?!? And I can't find a setting to turn off the registration. It always goes to the registration page, which is basically the thing I want to avoid :)

Ivo,
LinkedIn does not allow us to get the user's email address from their system. Because of that, JLinked doesn't have an option to automatically create the user like we have in JFBConnect.. where Facebook allows us to get the user's email address.

However, the overall registration process is still a lot quicker (less form-y) than it could be due to all the information you can import from LinkedIn, which is less stuff the user has to fill out.

From user feedback of JLinked v1.0 though, we've already started work on v1.1 which will have a lot of registration improvements and options to further decrease the amount of information necessary:
* Option to hide the "Name" field (it's already being imported from LinkedIn)
* Option to hide the username field (we can automatically create it like in JFBConnect)
* Option to hide the password fields (would prevent the user from logging in through Joomla in the future, but still allow them to login with LinkedIn).

When those are hidden, the only field left would be the email address field. We've considered simply 'making up' an email address for the user, but don't plan on adding that as it would cause too much confusion, and most administrators want the user's real email address.

If you have any feedback or suggestions on the above, definitely let us know. Of course, we do have a 30-day money back guarantee, so if you just don't think JLinked will work for your site, no problem.

Thanks,
Alex

Uff, really sorry to hear that. I thought it can work just as FB does, one click, one allow and you are done. My main issue is that I want to completely remove any reference to Joomla! login system and do it with the FB login, but it doesn't appear to be possible with LinkedIn.

I will use the option to refund for the moment and probably will come back in few months to see if it is improved in a way that I can use it.
Suggestion on how to handle it (no idea if it is possible): If you can create anything but the e-mail, ask for the e-mail before the redirect to LinkedIn. That way it will not appear like a registration, but more like: "Enter your LinkedIn e-mail to connect".

Ivo,
No worries about the refund. If you would, please fill out the refund request form so it gets taken care of properly:
www.sourcecoast.com/refund-request

As for your suggestion, I think that may be more confusing for a few reasons:
1) If the email address needs to be filled out before clicking the Login With LinkedIn button, that will be confusing for users who have already registered through LinkedIn since it won't be necessary to fill that in to simply login.
2) It will also be confusing for new users as they may then have to re-enter their LinkedIn email address in the LinkedIn login box if they aren't already logged into LinkedIn.

Either way, we'll definitely be re-evaluating the login/registration functionality as we work on v1.1. We still won't be able to get the email address, but plan to streamline the registration process even further. Any other feedback or ideas is definitely welcome.

Thanks,
Alex
