Topic-icon JLinked Syncronization on User Login

Sorry to post this in the JFBConnect Forum; there does not seem to a forum established for JLinked yet (most likely because the product is so new). If the moderator could move this topic to the correct location when available, that would be great.

We are working with the JLinked product and it is importing LinkedIn profile information nicely upon initial site registration. We are testing the editing of our LinkedIn profiles, changing job titles in LinkedIn, modifying LinkedIn profile pictures after registering for the Joomla site and these changes do not seem to update within Joomla upon next login as we have seen in JFBConnect. A couple questions:

1. Is JLinked supposed to be importing updated LinkedIn profiles or is this a one time import that only happend during registration?
2. If this is currently a one time import, are there plans to extend the functionality to import fresh data during return user logins? It seems like this would be a great feature as our users will be updating their LinkedIn accounts every so often and it would be nice to have the most current information from LinkedIn in their profile within Joomla.

Thanks!

Sorry about the forum issue. There is a forum for JLinked, but we did realize that some of the permissions weren't right for that forum. I updated them, and will move this directly after I post this. If you run into issues seeing the post (or forum), just let us know!

Right now, JLinked does not automatically re-import profiles. It only does it during registration. The reason for this is due to the LinkedIn terms of service. They state that a user must explicitly state that they approve importing their data every time the site wishes to do it. That's why we have the checkbox on the registration page. We're looking into other ways to import data after subsequent logins, and have some ideas, but for now, unfortunately, that's not possible.

The current plan(s) are to (at the very least) have a "Import profile" button on the Joomla "User Details" page. Once we add it, it should be pretty simple to add it to other places (JomSocial, CB, etc), and we'll likely try to make a {JLinkedImportProfile} tag (or something similar) that will just be a one-click link for doing it. Again, this is tentative.

As with everything new, we're still feeling out what we can do as well as the best way to do it. The most important thing for us, always, is keeping our users on the "right" side of the Terms of Service :)

Hope that makes sense, but if you have any comments or other feedback, we're always listening!

Thanks,
Alex

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. We understand the re-import on return visits may be an issue due to the LinkedIN TOS. Got to abide by the rules :)

Having some kind of button to manually re-update LinkedIn profile fields down the road would be excellent. This could even be a valuable function for JFBConnect as well, as some users may want to only update their profile at certain times but not necessarily on every visit. I suppose this could go even further by letting the user or admin specify which specific fields are automatically and manually updated on a user by user basis or but understand this increases the complexity of the application quite a bit.

Thanks again for your awesome products, we look forward to seeing where this goes!

Yeah, the ability to let a user update their info is definitely coming at some point over the next few months. Most of the pieces are there, it's just a matter of putting it all together now. Once we do it in one place, I'm sure we'll get a lot of feedback on other ways that admins would like to provide it. Our users are great at feedback and helping to guide what we do next, and I can see (eventually) doing a lot of the things you mention above.

Anyways, thanks for the kind words about our extensions, we really appreciate it. If you haven't already, please consider leaving a rating and review for JFBConnect on the Joomla Extension Directory. JLinked hasn't been published yet.. expecting it to go live next week, and when it does, we'd love it if you'd consider rating it too! We'll be sending out a newsletter when it's published on the JED.. so you'll know :D

Thanks, and good luck,
Alex

Just to keep this thread in one place (although I am using Joomla 1.5) - presumably it would be allowed by LinkedIn to update the mapped fields from LinkedIn when the user first connects their existing registration to LinkedIn. Would it be possible to set this as an option?

My site has a lot of pre-existing registrations, and we would like to populate their profiles with LinkedIn data - especially their avatars.

No worries about posting here. Sometimes the 1.5 vs 1.7 forums can be a fuzzy line, but it does help when there's an issue to debug so we're all at the same starting point. For feature discussions though, we try to keep all the Joomla versions in parity so it doesn't really matter what forum you post in.

We're hoping in January to release an update that will allow users to import their profile information with the click of a button when they want too, not just during registration and login as deemed by the administrator. It's still in the concept phase, but we're not foreseeing any huge difficulties with implementation (yet). This will allow us to abide by the LinkedIn ToS's, and add a feature that both JLinked and JFBConnect user's would probably like (more flexibility over when the profile is imported).

Hope that helps explain our current thinking, and we'll have more details in a month (or so).

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks - was suggesting adding a "Permission for profile to be added" tick box below the "If you already have a an account [on Joomla] just log in here and we'll link your linkedin account to it"

Hehe.. yeah, that's a good idea too :D I've added it to our tracker, and I'm pretty confident it would be in the 1.1 release.

Thanks for the feedback!
