Topic-icon JFBConnect vs. Default Jomsocial 2.2 Facebook Integration

Oh boy - just for the record, I am going to embarrass myself. (Just know that I know this.:)

I am new to everything, let me just start there. I am using Joomla 1.5 and Jomsocial 2.2. Within Jomsocial, there appears to be a Facebook integration set up already in place. I assume it's not that great, otherwise you wouldn't have built a component that people are raving about review-wise. That being said, maybe it is already outlined here on the website and I am just missing it.

My question: What is the different between that Jomsocial default Facebook integration and your JFBConnect component? What are the benefits of purchasing JFBConnect vs. using the "free" default one? Obviously I've read the outstanding reviews, but it's good to get the info from the horses mouth direct, as I have absolutely no problem spending money on a BETTER product. (Again, if there is a link with that info already, can you point me in that direction?)

Thanks for your time and help. Congrats on your success!

As I've been told many times, there are no stupid questions.. and when it comes to prospective users, that's doubly true :)

To start, JomSocial's Facebook integration may be all you need, and we'd honestly recommend you start with it. It will let user's easily sign up to your site, but that's about where it ends. JFBConnect adds the ability to import the user's Facebook profile into JomSocial automatically, so that you can have their college, employer, favorite books or music, and other types of information so that you can get that information without additional forms for the user.

Additional features during registration are automatic username generation which means that JFBConnect will create the Joomla username for the user automatically so they don't see any forms during registration. Generally, this isn't as great for a 'social' site, but is great for an ecommerce site or other place where you just want user's to register immediately.

A little further along with registration and logging in, JFBConnect has the ability to post to the user's wall when they register or login with a link back to your site. This is great to automatically promote your site to your new user's friends.

Beyond registration, and into territory that JomSocial doesn't venture, we have all the social widgets including Like buttons, Comment widgets, Fan boxes, etc. These all help to tie your site into Facebook and get more cross-communication going, which again, helps promote your site by more posts to user's wall. Additionally, we fully support the Open Graph protocol which lets you (easily) describe your page to Facebook. Similar to standard meta tags, you can set the title, description, image and extra information about your page that will show up in a user's wall when posting there.

For easy-integration, we have a content plugin which can automatically insert the Like or Comment box into all your content/articles so you don't have to deal with it.

So, that's a lot of the 'big' features we have now. Our 4.0 release is coming up in July, which will have a handful of really nifty features we can't wait to start promoting, but not quite yet :)

Again, we'd recommend trying JomSocial's integration.. then, if you think it's not right for you, try JFBConnect. We even have the ability to import your existing Facebook/Joomla connections, so you won't loose anything when you do. We also have a 30-day money back guarantee, so no worries there.

For all the features (though still some things are missing), see our features page and click around a bit :)

we are running jomsocial with multiple profiles.
question :If we use JFBconnect, would users be still able to select they PROFILETYPE first before they import their facebook profile.ie: would JFBconnect integrate well with multiple profiles in jomsocial ?

Yes, in the latest 3.4 release, we added the ability for user's to select their profile type. The admin can also select a default profile type for all Facebook user's if they don't want the user to select it (but don't want them to have all fields). 3.4 also added the option to show the "Accept Terms" checkbox field to the registration process.

We haven't updated our demo site in a while (in the process), so there's not a way to test the profile selection right now, but I've attached a screenshot of what it looks like now.

Hope that helps, and let us know if you have any other questions,

Thanks for all of the helpful information. I see above that it says: JFBConnect 3.4 Released! It states that it can do a "customizeable automatic username generation." Is that more like a Profile URL extension (option)?

I ask because that is a very cool feature if it can create/generate vanity URLS for our clients. I've actually been looking to purchase that extension separately for my site, so if this can do it, even better!:)

Nope, unfortunately, that's not what it is at all :)

JFBConnect has a 'one-click' registration mode where when the user signs in through Facebook, it creates their Joomla account for them. The cusomizeable username generation lets you select from a few different formats to pick the username.. on our site, we're currently using the first 3 letters of the user's first and last name from Facebook.. which is why your username here is "angber". It generates some user-friendly (and sometimes amusing) usernames, and is better than a more computerized fb_12345 (which was the default before).

Hope that helps explain, and we hope you choose to subscribe. Should you have any other questions first though, just let us know!

Got it. Thanks for the explanation. Actually, that's not really a big deal. The reviews are outstanding on this product of yours. One thing I am not quite sure about is how it would work with paid subscriptions. We are using JPayPlans for subscriptions and their different (Doctor/Patient) Profile Types that people can select from. Right now, after people create their usernames/passwords, it asks them what subscription plan they want, such as a 6 month or 1 year or free plan. (The free plan provides only limited functionality.) People can also upgrade their account at any time as well. Will JFBConnect be able to work with this registration/usability flow or even work with JPayPlans? I hope that makes sense - I could be over-thinking this and maybe it is a ridiculous question to begin with. Thank you.

It likely won't integrate perfectly with their registration flows, but should work with JPayPlans overall. JFBConnect creates a standard Joomla user, which any extension sees like any other Joomla user, so upgrades should work just fine after they're registered.

As for the initial registration flow, you can easily set the new user redirection (vs a separate returning user redirection) and depending on how JPayPlans works, you should be able to simply redirect new users to the "Select a subscription" page. Can't guarantee it will be that easy, but as you've seen, we have great support and will do what we can to get you going if not.

Thanks,
Alex

My question is 2 parts:
1. how does facebook come up with suggested friends ?? I think it is reading my contacts in my yahoo email. Is this true ??
2. Does your product do something similar ??? If not - can you recommend a product that does do the contact integration and sends email suggesting they join my jomsocial website ??

1) Facebook uses many different methods to determine suggested friends.. email contacts (if you've given access to your account) and common friends of friends are the most common.

2) Our product doesn't do friend recommendations automatically, but we include a friend invitation module which allows a user to easily invite their friends to your site.

Hope that helps,
Alex
