pre sales

OK will have to try it here. I have attempted to send several emails over the last month to sourcecoast via your contact form and my yahoo email account. It never goes through and I get a mail delivery failed notice every time telling me your email server has rejected the request regardless which email account I use. Its the same email used to register for this account back when sending the first contact attempt. Figured you would like to know this bit of information...

As far as jfbconnect registration component, does it have any function built in to assign new registrations to different acl user groups or does it only allow registration from other social network accounts to joomla's default single registration group for access?

If not, can you recommend any other components that can do this yet work with jfbconnect? I am not looking for a full bells and whistles paid membership, subscription registration, acl manager type of option. All it needs to do is allow users to choose an access/group to join at registration based on the groups I set up for their access.

I will also be using joomla with Jreviews and their addons for this application.

Thank you very much
Daniel

Re: pre sales

Daniel,
First, I'm sorry you're having issues with email. I'm curious as to why the email is getting bounced. That's a bit strange and not something we've heard of before. We do a bit of testing with that and get many contact forms, from yahoo included, but we'll gladly investigate further.

As to your questions:

As far as jfbconnect registration component, does it have any function built in to assign new registrations to different acl user groups or does it only allow registration from other social network accounts to joomla's default single registration group for access?

Right now, we only register into the default registration group. However, the next release, JFBConnect v7.1, will let you (the admin) select which group(s) a social network user will register into. You'll be able to select single or multiple groups for the user to be put into, but it will not be a user-choice.

If not, can you recommend any other components that can do this yet work with jfbconnect? I am not looking for a full bells and whistles paid membership, subscription registration, acl manager type of option. All it needs to do is allow users to choose an access/group to join at registration based on the groups I set up for their access.

Unfortunately, we won't support letting the user choose their group. That is another step I could see us investigating, but I don't want to give any timelines on when that would happen. There's extra security required in implementing that to prevent a user escalating them into a admin-type role, which can obviously have some bad results.

I don't have a good recommendation on an extension to let the user choose their own group that isn't a full-blown extension of some sort. Some 'community', paid membership, subscription and other extensions can do this.. but most of the time, it's for their own groups, not the standard Joomla ACL ones and each of those extensions usually have a ton of other features. It wouldn't be helpful for me to say one is better than the other because it really depends on which would fit your site better with all the other stuff they'd bring with them.

I hope that helps explain. If you have any other questions about what we'll support in 7.1 or details on what you'd really like to see implemented, I'd love to hear further from you. Specifically, we have an 'automatic registration' flow where the user doesn't have to add a username, password or provide an email address.. all that's pulled from the social network and the Joomla account is created automatically. Would you want the user to still pick a group with automatic registration, or are you envisioning a sort of mini-registration where the user authenticates with a social account and then chooses their group before the account is created?

Thanks,
Alex

Re: pre sales

Just wanted to follow up. We've gone back through 2 months worth of contact forms which we store in our database as well as get emails about. Yours from that period is the only that didn't make it to our inbox. I was also able to find your email from March 10th and can confirm we didn't receive that either.

I'm very sorry it never came through. If you could send me the full email you response you received, that would be great as it usually contains the diagnostic information to determine why a mail may have been blocked. You can email me at alex dot andreae at sourcecoast.com

Thanks,
Alex

Thank you for the reply. I deleted the returned emails. Can send another from your contact form to get the full return header for you.

From a security standpoint its even riskier then sharing data and account information across social network servers?

The core assigns the user to a chosen group by default at registration. One would think it could be possible to securely allow the user to choose a group of the same credentials or access level that only differs by name. Being there's the ability to create and grant different access levels in joomla, from an administrator stand point it seems counterproductive having to manually set user access after registration for tens of thousands of users.

I found a few plugins without the bloat of other member/subscription components I am testing. They are very small and light, working off of the new core user profile plugin. Next I would have to work on the compatibility with jfbconnect to incorporate the selection of user groups. My concern with yet another third party plugin to do this is the longevity with their support.

I will keep researching this and contact some of the subscription component providers for more input and compatibility with your offerings and jreviews.

Thank you
Daniel

Re: pre sales

No. What I said may be confusing.
* Getting the account info from a social network is very secure. It's all done over SSL, so encryption is involved and no unauthorized people should be able to 'see' any of the data transmitted.
* Implementing a system that let's the user choose their user group needs to be done very carefully. If done poorly, it could open the door to a user registering and automatically setting themselves as super admin or something. So, it could be a security problem if done wrong or bugs are found. Therefore, its paramount on us (the developers) to implement and test any solution we create that would allow the user to choose their own group while still giving you (the site admin) control over how it would work... like setting which groups the user would be allowed to assign themselves too.

As mentioned, the next release will let you (the admin) change the default group(s) that users are assigned too. I could very easily see extending that in a future release to allow the user to choose their group during registration as well as it'd definitely be a nice feature that I think many sites could take advantage of.

Thanks,
Alex
