Do you know why my image would appear as a cropped square version on the Timeline but works correctly on the Newsfeed? I am using custom page overrides. Here they are:

{SCOpenGraph title=WatchThinkVote Builds Consensus Around Voting Rights}
{SCOpenGraph url=http://www.watchthinkvote.com/consensus-building/voting-rights}
{SCOpenGraph site_name=WatchThinkVote}
{SCOpenGraph description=Are voting rights under attack, or is there massive fraud that needs to be corrected?}

{SCOpenGraph article:author=https://www.facebook.com/rembrandt01}
{SCOpenGraph article:publisher=https://www.facebook.com/WatchThinkVote?bookmark_t=page}

I'm attaching screen shots of each for you

I've figured out a work around to the image being cropped square on the timeline and rectangular on the newsfeed. I made a square image and it is now cropped on the newsfeed and looks ok on the timeline. I can edit the image so it looks ok cropped on the newsfeed. Attached are additional screen shots. If you have any information on how I can get large rectangular images on both the news feed and timeline I would greatly appreciate your help.

Sorry for the delay. Facebook has changed their best practices for images a few times over the years. Square images always seemed to be a good option though as Facebook can crop them in either direction when necessary.

With that said, their current guidelines actually state:

We've also redesigned link page posts so that the aspect ratio for images is the same across desktop and mobile News Feed. Try to keep your images as close to 1.91:1 aspect ratio as possible to display the full image in News Feed without any cropping.

There's more that you can read about actual resolution in their recommendations , specifically, section 4.

I hope that helps, and I'm glad you've found something that's working for you now. Should you need anything else, just let me know!

Thanks,
Alex

Hey Alex. I've gone over all the Facebook guidelines and some things are not behaving the way they say they should. Even though my images are in the 1.91:1 aspect ratio, they end up square and cropped on shares and comments. I read that is FB thinks your thumbnail image is less than 560 x 292 pix it will resize them to 100 x 72. My images are much larger than the 500 x 292. My question is: Does JFB do any resizing or create thumbnails that are separate from the image linked to the OG tags? Could FB be seeing some resized image created by Joomla or JFB?

JFBConnect doesn't do any resizing or alterations to your images at all. You can check what Facebook sees as your Open Graph tags by running a URL through their Open Graph debug tool, below:
developers.facebook.com/tools/debug

That should show you the actual image it's using from your site.. Facebook may then be cropping it, but we can't prevent that.

This sort of goes along with what I said above... square images are usually the best. Even better is square images with the most important content in the dead center. From that, they can crop horizontally or vertically and hopefully not screw with the intent of the image. They can also use the square directly.

Facebook changes their image handling pretty frequently and there are *a ton* of ways an image can be shown. Obviously, their own guidelines aren't ever perfect.

Hopefully the Debug Tool link above will help shed some light on things and also help you diagnose if it's a wrong image issue (from JFBConnect/Open Graph tags) or something they are doing after the fact.

Keep us posted on if you need anything else,
Alex

Thank you so much for your reply. Square dead center - yes, Ok, I'll do that. Thanks again.
