Yes, there is a reason. Basically, the values from Facebook may not 'align' with the values on your site. Facebook always returns 'male' and 'female' (I think), but your site could have those values or boy/girl, dude/dudette, etc. If we imported male/female, it wouldn't work with JomSocial's search stuff.
We are planning to create a special way to 'map' between the gender fields and set what it should go to in JomSocial, but we haven't got there yet.
