Topic-icon Open Graph image set in page override is not being updated

I have just upgraded the component. I am sharing a page on our site in an EasySocial status update. The page being shared has Open Graph information in a page override that sets the title, image and description. I have updated the image path but the old image is still being referenced in EasySocial when adding the link. When I use the JFBC Social Meta tab it confirms that the path for the image has been updated and the path is correct because the image is displayed when using the JFBC preview. Do you know why this is happening please? I need to ensure that the correct image is used. There seems to be a problem when the Open Graph image page override is changed.

Can you help explain this:

but the old image is still being referenced in EasySocial when adding the link.

How are you adding or sharing the link? Are you using the Facebook Like or Share button, sharing directly on Facebook.com or using some tool within EasySocial?

Generally, Facebook will re-scan your page every 1-7 days to check for new Open Graph tags. That means old values can be cached. You can use the Facebook Open Graph Debug Tool to check how Facebook sees the page *and* have their cache updated immediately by hitting the "Fetch now" button after putting in a URL.

If the information in the Debug Tool shows correct, you should be good to go.

One thing to note is that Facebook doesn't allow changing some Open Graph tags after a page has accumulated enough Likes and Shares. That prevents a really popular page from switching it's tags to something very different than what was originally Like'd, which could be obviously used for 'bad' things.

I hope that helps explain, but if you need anything else, just let us know.

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks Alex. I may have not explained myself well or perhaps I do not properly understand how the overrides work.

I am adding the Open Graph page override to the description field in a course created in a learning management system so that when a link is made to the course this image is used. The link is shared by using the Link in an EasySocial stream post on the site, not by a Facebook Like button. I hope the attachment illustrates what I mean.

The problem with the original image it that it is too low a resolution to work well in ES, so I have replaced it with an alternative. For some reason the old image originally specified in the page override is being used, despite being updated.

Ok.. just so I'm sure:
* You're adding the override using a {SCOpenGraph ...} tag in the LMS you're using
* You're using the 'Link' button in EasySocial to share

The problem is likely that EasySocial is not looking at the raw Open Graph tags that are set on the page, which is what JFBConnect is setting. It's generating the thumbnail link based on other logic, either by guessing what it thinks the Open Graph tag should be or by picking whatever image it thinks is best.

There's not a way we can fix this behavior within EasySocial. The Open Graph tags are meant for Facebook and other social networks that view your page to determine how best to show the content from the page. For software that is already working on your site, like EasySocial, it can use a lot more information that isn't immediately visible on the actual page to determine how to share a link.

You may want to contact the EasySocial developers to help them understand that the wrong image is being picked up and ask them how to properly override that image so that EasySocial picks a better one. The Open Graph tags you're setting could be an option, but ES may have other ways to override that image as well.

Thanks,
Alex
