Share buttons not working properly

Share buttons not working properly

I may have some conflict going on or open graph or global config settings awry that's causing this, but I'm having difficulty getting share buttons to work on a particular website and I'm at a loss.  I need some help.  It's not pulling the OG image or it's giving a share of the general site instead of the specific page/article intended and it's not pulling an OG description.  The client is more than a little stressed and I'm pressed for time as a result of this not working as intended.  Please help.

Re: Share buttons not working properly

This is probably caused by the Open Graph tags being set incorrectly.

There are several ways that JFBConnect can set these tags, as described here. If the extension for the pages is a supported extension (such as Joomla articles, K2 items, etc), you can enable the appropriate 'Open Graph' plugin that is installed with JFBConnect. For instance, enable 'Open Graph - Content' for Joomla articles and JFBConnect will automatically set the image and description based on the article. You can have further control over the tags by creating an Open Graph object in JFBConnect backend > Social Meta > Objects section. If you're using a different extension, you can manually insert Open Graph tags using the following syntax: {SCOpenGraph og:description=My Description}{SCOpenGraph og:image=FULL/PATH/TO/IMAGE}

Once you make any changes to the page/OG tags, you'll need to re-scrape the page with the Facebook Sharing Debugger. Enter the URL, click Debug, then click on Scrape Again button on the new page.

If you think you have the tags set up correctly but the image preview is still incorrect, please provide a specific URL so that I can see the page.

Re: Share buttons not working properly

How can I message you page credentials to see inside our CP without also disclosing to the public?  I believe I have two of the open graph plugins installed that came with JFBC but I worry I may have conflicts with similar plugins not part of your software in the case of this particular site.

Re: Share buttons not working properly

When using the debugger, after re-scraping, the OG image disappeared altogether and I get a strange happening on the OG URL where it doubles the website address to main page:

https://mysite.com/https://mysite.com for og:url Meta Tag Where (mysite) is actually the URL of the website (that I don't wish to publicly disclose).

Re: Share buttons not working properly

Also, comment moderation is becoming a problem as I have this ability on some articles and not others.  Perplexing.

Re: Share buttons not working properly

I'm also getting this in the debugger but all of these properties are set in the component:  The following required properties are missing: og:url, og:type, og:title, og:image, og:description, fb:app_id

Click on the envelope icon under my avatar to send me a private message. If you send me backend credentials plus a specific URL to see the problem on the front-end, that'd be the fastest way I can help figure out the issue.

[Edited to add]
* Is the page you're having a problem with a Joomla article? Or is it from another extension - EasyBlog, K2, etc?
* If the correct Open Graph plugins are enabled, and you haven't set JFBConnect to skip the component, I'd have to investigate why the standard Open Graph tags are missing - fb:app_id and og:title should always be set by JFBConnect...
* The comment moderation may have something to do with the incorrect og:url.

I'm looking into it. Trying to narrow down what's generating the incorrect og:url tag right now....

Re: Share buttons not working properly

Good, I was just going to check back because the firewall software sent me notification the configuration.php file was modified (which is fine so long as that was intentional).  I just wanted to make sure it was actually you guys using the account I created to do this.

I've replied, but I fear it may not be of much help as the possible conflicts I could think of have already been disabled.  current/sad

Re: Share buttons not working properly

'J2Store - Canonical' seems to be the culprit. It's a system plugin.

If I disable the incorrect canonical is not inserted and our og:url seems proper. I then re-scraped the page on the FB debugger and it showed a reasonable preview for me.

I'm not sure how your site is structured as far as products and regular articles. Can you shed some light on how this plugin is used for you?

Re: Share buttons not working properly

So that's solved then?  I just tried with another product and it worked.  I know the J2Store developer so I can talk with him about whether I can keep this disabled so it no longer interferes.

So if that's the case, I just re-scrape everything and it's good to go?

To answer your one question, the J2Store basically turns an article into a product you can buy, and the pictures associated are set up through the J2Store component as well as the buy button and its payment gateways are also plugins.  So I have individual articles set in the drop down menus and I have the main titles as category blog where it'll allow you to see all products (articles) in a particular category at once.

Re: Share buttons not working properly

The last problem that I don't know how to fix but i tried to follow someone else who had similar issue, but the JFBC seems to stay over top of my drop downs when navigating from desktop.  Is there a way to make sure the menu can go over top of the buttons?

Re: Share buttons not working properly

The Open Graph tags at the pages that I looked at seemed good to me. Yes, once the tags are correct (by disabling that plugin), you can manually scrape the pages or let Facebook automatically scrape them (at an unknown time) to update the share previews to the correct images/descriptions. If you see any that remain incorrect after scraping, of course let me know.

If you determine that you do need that plugin for J2Store, the JFBConnect code to follow the canonical to build og:url could be commented out for your site. I could give you instructions on how to do that if needed. We don't currently have an option to skip it, but that wouldn't be a difficult setting to add in the future.

The z-index needs to be changed so that it goes behind the menu items.

Code:

div.scsocialbuttons {

z-index: 1 !important;
}

Where exactly, or which file. . . where do I insert the code you've given me?

Re: Share buttons not working properly

That block of code needs to go in a CSS file. I would suggest putting it at the end of your template CSS file, so you don't lose it on upgrade of JFBConnect. Looking at your page, I'd try the following file for your template: /templates/jf_chrome/css/jf_custom.css

Re: Share buttons not working properly

I've copied and pasted the code into that location, saved, and overwritten, but the dropdowns are still covered by the buttons.  I've done a global checkin, cleared cache, fixed database, deleted expired cache, and also cleared the cache on my web browser.

Re: Share buttons not working properly

And after re-scraping, everything seems to work perfectly. . . in Chrome.  However, my share buttons do not work properly in Firefox.  No facebook at all, and the twitter button shows only "Tweet" in text.  The only buttons that do seem to work are Google+ and Pinterest.  No facebook buttons displayed.  no linked in.  No likebox in the bottom left set up as a module. No comment ability.  Again, this is only in Firefox. All of the above seems to work perfectly in Chrome.

If I go to the URL for that css file in my browser, it's empty without styles - just has the following:

/**
* This is custom stylesheet, type any custom styles
*/

However, I see in your backend that you've added the code in the jf_custom.css file. There is a css-compiled directory. I saw a jf_custom_style_... compiled file that I added the style to manually. It now shows up and the menu goes in front. The compiled custom file should be compiled instead of editing it like I did, but you'll have to figure out how to compile it on your own. The style is in the compiled file from my edit also, as of now, though.

Do you have any Firefox add-ons that could prevent this? I just opened Firefox and the buttons are displaying as expected. In most of the cases when the social buttons don't show in Firefox, it's due to an add-on/extension for Firefox which is blocking social networks. Please verify you don't have any privacy, tracking or social blocking add-ons enabled in Firefox.

Re: Share buttons not working properly

I was able to do a refresh on firefox and the buttons and controls re-appeared, but I'm still getting the dropdown menus going underneath the buttons on Chrome.

Hmm. Force a refresh in Chrome? It's working for me in Chrome and Firefox.
