Ladies and Gents,
As eager as you all are (as am I) to move to nested categories and better ACL in J 1.6, please understand it is still riddled with bugs. Especially with the installer and a few other things.
Think of it like "Vista" previewing before "Windows 7"...nice to have but relatively useless. :-)
As someone who does Joomla sites day in and out, I've advised all of my clients who have asked (out of 30+ only 1 has) to stay with 1.5 until 1.7 comes out and has a definitive upgrade/migration path.
I was doing J websites with 1.0 and jumped on the 1.5 band wagon really early. Something I lived to regret due to security and stability issues, and won't make that mistake again.
So for what it's worth, I applaud the JFBC team for moving with the times and supporting a 1.6 release but I'm personally waiting until at least 1.7.
I saw a tweet the other day saying that 1.7 features will freeze soon so I am only now seriously considering the move.
We couldn't agree more. Our 1.6 release is mainly a 'for show' release. While we feel JFBConnect is production worthy, and have received great feedback from those using the version; we're hesitant about Joomla 1.6 so far. The 1.6.3 release actually cleared a lot of issues up, but that doesn't mean some obvious things remain, and of course, more could be lurking underneath (especially security related).
Our plan with our 1.6 release though, is to get things ready for a seamless migration for JFBConnect from Joomla 1.5 to 1.6+ as well as setting up a development model (for us) that allows for feature parity (as best we can) between the releases. For the foreseeable future (remainder of the year at least), the Joomla 1.5 release will continue to be actively developed. Meanwhile, 1.6+ specific features will be added to JFBConnect. While nested categories are neat, one of the things that's widely unknown, but we're super excited about, is that Joomla 1.6 allows for custom profiles built in. No longer do you need JomSocial or Community Builder to collect additional information about your users. Just like with Joomla 1.5, we plan to have a profile plugin for Joomla 1.6 to import FB profile information without any 3rd party components. Again, there are few sites that we'd recommend should jump right into 1.6, but we are very excited about the opportunities that 1.6.3 and 1.7 and beyond present for JFBConnect.
Finally, we, currently, have no intent to split subscriptions up, so a valid JFBConnect subscription gets you access to whatever we make available. While it's a little more work on our end, it shouldn't slow down development (ideally) for Joomla 1.5 or Joomla 1.6 and beyond.. and all subscribers should be the beneficiaries of that!
Hope this explains our position. We agree a lot with you, but there is a lot of negativity toward Joomla 1.6, we're very excited about the possibilities it opens up!
I'm really looking forward to the profile thing. Especially if the reservations components make use of the profile feature as well.
Mainly CB and JS are overkill for what I need. (Which is just about a dozen or so profile fields)
I'm really not trying to be negative about 1.6, but I was an early adopter of 1.5 from 1.0 and wound up pulling my hair out for days on end. So I'm much more patient now!
Yup, and we'd definitely say that patience is good.. especially for any mission critical sites.
We also very much agree that so many sites use CB (or JomSocial) simply for additional profile fields, which is so overboard its rediculous. Unfortunately, there's not enough/well known 'simple' alternatives for just adding fields. Thankfully, Joomla 1.6 fixes that, but I'll be honest, we know very little about how it works right now.. it's a big investigation point for us. We do know it's there, and are excited about it though!
