I have been testing both jomsocial and jfbconnect all night trying to see if status messages are updating.
When I log into the test site via either jomsocial fconnect or jfbconnect then go to add a status message in jomsocial it eventually gets posted to facebook - this is fine. However:
When I go to jomsocial community page and log in using their fconnect the most recent activity in Facebook updates and shows in My Status
But when I use the jfbconnect login to log in via FaceBook Connect then go to the jomsocial page, it does not import the most recent activity from FaceBook.
Is this a bug or by design? If by design then it's going to confuse the heck out of site members, just as it confuses me.
Currently, JFBConnect does not set the JomSocial status message from Facebook or update Facebook's status message when it's updated in JomSocial. It's 'by design' right now, but we're planning to add this functionality in an update soon. With 3.1, we broke out integration of the profile integration into separate plugins. The separation allows us to add much more specific features to each specific profile integration like JomSocial, Community Builder, etc whereas before we were a little more limited.
Thanks for the feedback on what you're looking for. We agree, this would be a great feature to have.
Shorter than a quarter and longer than a week. A month'ish is a good estimate, but we're not locking it down. The main variable is whether we'll need to make any minor changes to the component to call the plugin at different times. I don't think we will, but we're on a more agressive release cycle for JFBConnect either way, so changes will be made as necessary.
Hope that helps, and thanks again for the feedback!
We're well into development for the 3.2 release. We'll be working on the Social Plugins this weekend to change their functionality a little for the changes we're doing for that release. We plan to be putting the first stab of updating status in at this time, and should be able to release a quick version that's compatible with 3.1 before we make too many sweeping changes..
So, in short, we'll hopefully have something available for 3.1 (the current version) by this weekend to test with.
Just wanted to let you know we just uploaded v3.1.1 of the JomSocial profile plugin. This plugin adds an option for importing the user's status from Facebook.
We investigated pushing updates for various items back to Facebook, and have a good path for how to do that, but it will require a separate JomSocial 'app' plugin. We'll be creating this soon (likely for or just after the 3.2 release), and we're excited for some of the things we'll be implementing. The plan is to allow you (the admin) to push status updates for a lot of the different activities that go on in JomSocial, not just status updates.. so, while it will be a little longer for communication in both directions to be implemented, we think you'll like what we do
Please test the new JomSocial profile plugin and let us know if you run into any issues. Certainly, suggestions and feedback is welcome!
This is good. If I could transcendentally figure out how to make other Joomla extension developers respond to bugs, problems and RFE ideas like you do, the world would be a better place. What is the timeframe for 3.2?
Oh Bob, you're making me blush We love what we do, and we do charge a price.. so try to make sure we make our users happy however we can.
As for 3.2, it's well on it's way. Our best target date would be mid-March, and that's realistic. However, as things happen, it could always be more towards the end of the month.
We uploaded the new JS profile plugin to our demo site (always a good testing/proving ground), and noticed that if you have a New User or Returning User message set, that's what will get imported into the users JS profile. I don't know if we can correct that (easily) now, but for the 3.2 release, we're going to try to import the message first, then update Facebook so that JS would have the last message the user put in there.. not your message. Hope that makes sense, and let us know if that sounds good, right, reasonable or if you have other suggestions on the best way to do it.
Alex, perhaps you think I disappeared, it's been so long, but not so fast. My attention got diverted and now I'm just getting back to testing again. I downloaded the new component, 3.1.2, and the most recent versions of all modules and plugins.
It does indeed appear that when I log into www.jtest.us it is importing the most recent Facebook comment into the status. This is great!
Now the one million dollar question, should the most recent jomsocial comment get posted to Facebook?
Answer is no, not yet.
We wanted to get this ability into our JomSocial profile plugin, but it's impossible to do that 'the right way'. Instead, we're planning to add a new JomSocial 'application' plugin in the future which will allow posting of multiple things back to Facebook.. this will be things like status updates, group joinings or posting, events, etc. Once the first 'push' feature is created, the rest should be very simple to do, as JomSocial has a good way to 'hook' into these types of events (anything that goes int the activity stream, actually).. so when we get it going, it should be able to be pretty flexible.
However, it's not available yet, and won't be with the 3.2 release either. We're going to target it as a feature release for after 3.2 though.
Hope that helps explain, and hope it's an ok solution, even though it's not available yet. As always, feedback is welcome. Glad you like the initial pulling of status so far!
Hey, I'm not above doing things the wrong way if there is no other way. Harumph! If it weren't for the wrong way, politics wouldn't exist.
So you know I won't let you off with a general answer. Can you provide an ETA, something I can feed to the wolves?
Alex, I just reconfirmed with my client. For the purposes of her website she doesn't want to auto-import the most recent Facebook comment because undoubtedly most Facebook comments will be out of context with the site social purpose. However she does want to be able to push to Facebook.
Are you planning to set up the functionality so that you can enable/disable the push in either direction? What she said makes perfect sense.
Yes, that's definitely planned. The best I can say right now is late April. After the 3.2 release (which is in testing now for release), we'll be focusing on a Joomla 1.6 compatible release. On the side, we'll be working on the JomSocial plugin as well as a few other non-core things, mainly with profile plugins. It is one of our highest priorities, outside of 1.6 compatibility, but I just can't pin-down the timeline right now.
Hope that, sorta, helps.
Yeah, the'll definitely be discreet options so you can enable one and disable the other. We try not to go overboard with options (though 3.2 adds about 1000), but in this case, we agree that more flexibility is good.
Alex, I have been remiss for a couple months, not totally off the planet but close. I just downloaded the latest version of JFBConnect 3.2 with all the new modules and plugins. Installed them on www.joomlatest.us. I see there is a new menu option called Social which addresses importing status/wall messages from Facebook. Left enabled it imports fine, if disabled it works fine - Jolly good show!
Going the other direction we were talking about posting the last jomsocial My Status to Facebook. I made this change.
Configuration --> Status / Wall --> Enable Status Updates: --> Yes
Is that the one to make this work? I ask because I added a My Status comment but didn't see it post to Facebook.
Nope, not done yet. I apologize for the delay, but the 'other direction' of posting to Facebook hasn't been completed yet. We still have the intent to get a more robust JomSocial application, but unfortunately have been focused on a few other things lately. We recently got the Joomla 1.6 version out and JFBConnect was recently implemented on the Joomla Extension Directory itself, which was huge for us.
Right now, we're focusing on updating the JomSocial plugin with pulling in 'better' status (if you're interested/have feedback, check out this post) as well as adding profile type support. Additionally, we're working on a VirtueMart profile plugin. Once done (late this week/early next), the JomSocial stuff is likely next on our plate.
Hope this helps explain our situation, and sorry for the delays again.
Good evening Alex. I'm really interested in getting a timeline on when this will be implemented. It appears that our subscription is due to expire in about a week. Any chance you'll have it out that soon?
Sorry to keep leading you on. I just added month to your subscription, because I don't know if the plugin will be available in the next 9 days. It has now moved up to the top 3 things for us to work on now (after the VM plugin was released and some updates to the CB plugin are just about out). Now, we're focused on the next revision of JFBConnect as well as updates to JomSocial integration in general.
Hope that helps explain where we are and, roughly, that it should be available ~soon
Thanks, and best of luck,
To be honest we would probably extend the subscription anyhow, but why waste an opportunity to rattle your cage?
Speaking of rattles, what's your roadmap for Joomla 1.7 and apparently 1.8? Pain?
I'm sure you would, or at least at some point will, re-subscribe. We don't normally extend subscriptions on a whim.. because we love re-subscriptions, of course. However, you've been asking for this for a while and we've actually mentioned that we're close to working on it soon.. and it hasn't materialized.
That's simply not how we like to operate, and therefore, I extended your subscription. I honestly still won't guarantee that the plugin will be available by the time your subscription now expires, but hopefully it will be.
Hope that makes sense, thanks for being a great supporter of JFBConnect, and for all your valuable feedback in the past. We do appreciate it.
So with the new updates this feature is still not available? is there any work around to make this happen?
