Yes, almost all functions will work just fine without an SSL certificate on your site. That includes Logging in, profile import, all the social widgets (Like, etc).

The only features that require an SSL certificate are showing your site within a Facebook Page and the Requests (invitation) features. The SSL certificate is required, by Facebook, for those features.

Hope that helps,
Alex

Hi Alex,
Thanks for your reply,
will a free self signed certificate (through openssl) work to activate those features ? or do I absolutely have to buy one ?
Thanks in advance

No. Browsers will not trust self-signed certificates, and neither will Facebook. You'd need a trusted certificate for those features to work. They can be had for as little as $12/year (multi-year) or about $20 / year for one year. We have a guide on purchasing them, but every host has different requirements, so you may need to make sure you can add an SSL to your hosting plan:

Hope that helps,
