With Google+ and Twitter, we don't show the user's avatar. The user's avatar can only be fetched by the user. In the usermap area, we don't want to make a request for each user avatar to display their avatar, so we don't even try. In the future, we may store the avatar URL for each user in the database, but we don't do that right now.
In 6.1, you shouldn't see any blank avatar blocks next to Google+ or Twitter, they'll just be missing altogether.
