Hi there,
EasyDiscuss from Stackideas has been released. It's an alternative to JomSocial and I'll be happy to leave jomSocial but I need to be sure that JFBConnect is as well integrated with EasySocial as it currently is with JomSocial.

Can you advise on what your current intentions/plans are regarding integration with EasySocial?

Thanks.

We should have some *awesome* integration with EasySocial out with the v5.2 release, around the end of this month. We're implementing a new registration flow that works seamlessly with EasySocial (and will work with JomSocial as well), as well as Open Graph support and other good features you've come to expect from JFBconnect/JomSocial integration.

We're working on a video and blog post that will, hopefully, go up late this week or early next giving a quick demo of the EasySocial integration we're planning.

We plan to fully support both JomSocial and EasySocial going forward, and will be developing new features for each as time goes on and as user's give feedback on what they'd like to have.

Thanks,
Alex

Very happy to hear. Do you anticipate any problems with switching a live site from JomSocial to EasySocial? Could it be as simple as uninstalling JomSocial and installing EasySocial? Would be great to learn of any possible breakdowns or issues to address so it can be a seamless transition.

You shouldn't have any problems with the JFBConnect side of things. Once a user has a Joomla account, JFBConnect can log them into it. It doesn't matter if that account also works with JomSocial, EasySocial or any other community extension. We have users move from CB to JomSocial all the time without issue. The same should be the same for JomSocial to EasySocial. ES also has a migrator to get profile information and most other information out of JomSocial, but that's outside of our territory and shouldn't affect JFBConnect either way.

Obviously, we'd recommend testing on a dev site, and let us know if you do run into any problems.

I hope that helps,
Alex

Awesome news. The release of EasySocial has gotten me to become a subscriber of all StackIdeas products. Jreviews integration is also underway. Now I have a power suite of components that can do just about anything:

JFBConnect
Jreviews
StackIdeas

Can't wait to get rid of JomSocial!

We're excited to support a new community extension and think Joomla could use 2 really good ones, and now we have them. We're also very excited about the new registration flow options that are going to open a lot of opportunities for other integrations and simplified user flows for administrators to manage.

Thanks for all the feedback, as always!

Hi Alex,
Just wanted to get an update on your integration with EasySocial. Is it safe to switch from JomSocial to EasySocial?

My main motivation is I don't like JomSocial's support or their pricing model and I'm expecting (hoping) that if I'm using EasyBlog, EasyDiscuss and EasySocial I'll have less conflicts (javascript, jquery etc.)

Would appreciate your thoughts now that you've seen EasySocial in action.

We have the registration and profile import part going. The only thing left now is for an Open Graph plugin. That's actually the last checkbox on our list for the v5.2 release, which is planned for about mid next week. That's a big goal for us, because afterwards, we're going to Joomla World Conference. So, if it has to slip, it would (unfortunately) be until the following week.. and we don't want that. Of course, if testing or development say it's not ready, then it's not ready. v5.2 is going to have a lot of new, great stuff in it.. so there's a lot of moving parts to deal with.

As for the switch, I can't state that either way. EasySocial seems very clean and well implemented. However, I'm not testing all the functionality and really running it like a real, production website. For us, we'll be recommending JomSocial and EasySocial going forward for 'community' sites. Each surely has it's pros and cons. JomSocial seems to be making good strides in improving support and new releases (and features). EasySocial is still new, which has big advantages (no legacy code to support) but also not as widely used, which means there could be some issues... not saying that I know of any or recommending avoiding it at all.. just that I'm not the best to ask.

In short, I'd say test like crazy, as with any new extension, and use what you think suits your site best. With the v5.2 release, we'll have support for EasySocial and JomSocial for Facebook, Google+ and Twitter authentication, profile import, Open Graph Actions and more general social network integration.. so we'll be able to enhance whatever is best for your site.

I hope that helps,
Alex

I sure hope the 5.2 release is imminent (today?), but even if it has to slip, my question is to what extent JFBConnect works with EasySocial (even the 5.1.2 version)? Does this mean that it's completely non-functional? We happen to have some spare cycles and could spend the time migrating to EasySocial even today... (since middle of week is best for us as our weekends are heavy). To what extent would Social Login/Register break under the current 5.1.2? I just want to understand so we can plan. We can wait for full deployment, but it would help our testing to know what works and doesn't with even the 5.1.2 version. Thanks.

The v5.2 release will be out on Friday. We're prepping everything for it's release now.

The v5.1.2 release doesn't have specific EasySocial integration. It does create standard Joomla users which EasySocial detects, but avatars, profiles, etc won't be imported into it.

The v5.2 release adds EasySocial profile integration so you can import profile information, avatars, and cover photos from Facebook, Google+ and Twitter into it. There's also a new registration option where you can use EasySocial (or JomSocial or Joomla) for the registration path. That way, you have to only manage one registration flow on your site, and all the user information will be pre-filled, or optionally hidden, making the registration process much easier. Automatic registration is still an option as well, for the social networks that support it. Twitter will always have to use a registration form of some sort as Twitter will not provide the user's Email address.

To what extent would Social Login/Register break under the current 5.1.2? I just want to understand so we can plan.

I'm honestly not sure what you mean here. Hopefully the above explained it, but if not, let me know.

Thanks,
Alex
