But then how will I update after my subscription expires? ( hee hee )

I took a look and that ARS seems to be a good solution. So the update link, in that case, will be in JFBC control panel rather than using Joomlas update system? Not that it matters, just curious. I for one don't mind using generated code, seems no different than using a license key.

It sure would be a lot simpler if Joomla was designed to, somehow, allow the user to login to the devs website for updating commercial extensions. Something like a pop-up window that says "Please log in to upgrade this extension", and the devs could have a simple plugin/module on their site that the pop-up window would link to.

Anywayz.. you mentioned more features for 4.2? Cool! :D

I believe (we're still investigating) that the ARS system actually has the ability to integrate with the Joomla Installer in 2.5 so you can use that installer, but it will go through ARS to validate the download code. All of these questions are why we'll be testing it first on JLinked. While that extension is popular, it's not nearly as widely used as JFBConnect.. so it's a better test-ground for these types of things.

The advantage of the download key is that you don't need it if you don't want to use it. You can always install manually, and we -never- will lock the extension if your subscription expires.. so the download code would simply let you more easily get the newest version available if your subscription is still active. Once expired, the extension will keep working, you just won't be able to update automatically (or access it in the download area of sourcecoast.com).

Joomla seems to be going in a direction that's easier for commercial/registration-required extensions to be updated in. The ARS updater is actually being investigated to be used (or leveraged) in the 3.0 version of Joomla. There's a lot of good things it does over and above what Joomla does now, in addition to the download key support.. so far, we're definitely excited about the option, but a lot more investigation is required.

As for 4.2, it's still being scoped out. Some things (better profile integration for 3rd party integration and more 'dynamic' Facebook Requests) are definitely coming. There's a few other improvements in the planning stage, but just haven't nailed it all down yet.

Thanks for all the feedback!
Alex
