Just signed up today. I'm going through the Configuration Guide one step at a time. For me the first step gave me an error and didn't work.

My Joomla site is 1.7.

I downloaded

com_jfbconnect_j1.6_j1.7_v4.0.3.tar
jfbconnect_profile_plugins_j1.6_j1.7_v4.0_20110913_unzip_first
jfbconnect_social_modules_j1.6_j1.7_v4.0_20110909_unzip_first

The first step in the Configuration Guide was to install...
com_jfbconnect_j1.6_j1.7_v4.0.3.tar

I got the following ERROR.

Warning: Failed to move file!
JFile: :read: Unable to open file: /var/www/html/tmp/com_jfbconnect_j1.6_j1.7_v4.0.3.tar.gz
Unable to read archive

I don't have many extentions since this is new site. No other Facebook products.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well that's not good when you're stumped on step 1! :)

That's not a common error, actually, and not sure immediately why it wouldn't install. It certainly looks like you're on a Linux server (Windows ones sometimes give that issue)... Can you let me know the following:
1) I'm assuming other extensions install just fine, correct?
2) If you go to Site -> System Information, and then the Directory Permissions tab, make sure the /tmp directory is marked green and writeable
3) If that doesn't work, can you try FTP'ing the com_jfbconnect file to the /tmp directory of your Joomla site, and then in the installer, use that path to install (instead of using the Upload File installer) of Joomla.

Hopefully, one of those helps track down the issue. If not, we'll gladly help give more suggestions or (eventually, if ok) ask for access to the admin area to investigate further.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex, Thanks for your quick reply. One thing we did here recently was have our site moved from a shared hoting to a cloud server. I had to have a company do the move for me and since then some things are not working. This was the first time I tried to install an extention. Seems like it may have something to do with the move. I did not have this problem in the past with the old host. I do not understand the error code but I did forward this info to the guy who did the move and maybe he will know what the problem is. If you have any suggestions I would be glad to hear and will pass them on. Really looking forward to getting this going. Thanks again!

My best suggestions are:
1) Make sure the /tmp directory exists in your Joomla directory. Sometimes, moving sites doesn't always create this directory.
2) Make sure the directory is owned by the correct PHP/Apache user. This is server dependent, so I can't let you know what user that should be.
3) Make sure the permissions for that directory are writeable and readable by owner and by group. It should be writeable by everyone, as that's a security problem.

Hope that helps you, or the developer that moved the site, sort things out.

Thanks,
Alex

Alex, I'm still working on it. It should be as simple as setting the permissions but I have no clue how to do it. I guess it should have been done by the guy I paid to set up the server and tranfer the site to the new server but he won't respond after being paid and given a top rating on elance. So I'm going to start applying for grants to afford college and maybe in a few years I'll figure it out. So far I'm having really bad luck finding anyone to help me out with this.

How do you administer the server? You likely won't be able to do what you need to through FTP, but if you have cPanel, Plesk, or SSH (command line) access to the server, those should all let you do what you need to do. cPanel and Plesk both have file managers in them which you can set ownership and permissions for files, and the command line also lets you do it.

Let us know what you have, and we'll see if we can help. Also, depending on your hosting provider, they may be able to help. Some have great support, others, not so much.. but always good to test (if there's no charge).

Thanks,
Alex

How do I administer the server? Well I don't really.

I recently started my new site and I had it transfered from Bluehost shared hosting to a cloudserver by rackspace. They say thier customer service is great but you have to pay 145.00 for it. Wll I dpn't have that kind of moaney right now so I hired a frelancer with great ratings off of elance to move the joomla site from bluehost and set up the server for me. I was hoping after that not much could go wrong. An if it did I thought the guy I hired I could use on a case by case basis. So he moved the site and I paid him before testing things like being able to upload extentions ect. I just expected it would work. I bought your extention and when I uploaded it I learned the site is now not working right.

Anyways the new host is rackspace cloud servers and they say it is best edited through ssh comand line. Well I have no idea what this is. I've only worked in cpanel and I don't have that with this new server.
