Topic-icon How can I create individualized page descriptions

Hi Alex,

When I post a comment on one of my Joomla pages in your comment box, the comment plus my JBFC selected image show up on my FB wall. But the description that is in the post is just the meta-tags for my Joomla site. How can I create individualized page descriptions so the wall post has more specific information about the originating page?

Please / Thanks.

You can always use the {JFBCGraph description=Great description for this page} tag on your page. If that's not present, we have options to use the intro text to the article (configured in the Social Configuration -> Open Graph tab). If that's not set, then JFBConnect will use the meta description for the page which can be generic or set through other extensions.

Hope that helps, but if you need anything else, let us know.

Thanks,
Alex

Hey Alex,

Thanks for the quick response. I tried to set "Use beginning text in article for default" to yes and it pulled the text from a custom HTML module I made that has the quote of the day in it. It resides in the right hand column on my page. I wonder why it did that? Luckily, the quote had some relevance to the article but it was not the intro text.

Do you have any idea why that happened?

I tried the {JFBCGraph=Great Description} but it still pulled the text from the custom html module I made.

Spike,
After you update the Open Graph description, make sure you're using Facebook's URL debug tool to check what it sees:
developers.facebook.com/tools/debug

Changes on your site can take a few days to appear when you click the Like or Send button, if that's how you're testing. The Debug Tools has (generally) immediate results.

If that is how your testing and it's still not working, let me know and we can look into it more. If there's a specific page other than the homepage with the problem, let us know that too.

Thanks,
Alex

I disabled my custom html module "Thought for the day" and the OG then picked up the first 100 characters of the article because I had that setting set to yes in the Open Graph configuration. The OG setting overrides the JFBCGraph tag in the article. When I set the OG setting to no, the JFBCGraph tag works. I have to clean my site cache before the Object Debugger picks up the changes. I think I will use the JFBCGraph tag rather than the first 100 characters because I have more control over the description. It is exactly what I wanted.

Great program Alex. I'm going to renew my subscription and add the Linked In software.

Thanks for the renewal! We hope you enjoy JLinked as much as JFBConnect. We're working on the next release (v1.1) of it to work out a few initial release kinks, but it's still definitely up to our standards in it's current release.. just will get better with time :)

As for the description, yeah, we've had some debates about precedence between the "Use the first 100 chars" and manually setting a {JFBCGraph description=xx} tag on the page. If you have any comment/suggestions, feel free to let us know. Hopefully you're setup for now though.

Best of luck,
Alex
