Topic-icon Like button count not reflecting clicks

I am having an issue with the Like button not reflecting when someone clicks on it.

I am using the latest version of JFBConnect and am using the content plugin to populate my articles with the like buttons and comment fields. I also have the email notifications turned on so I am notified when someone clicks the like button or leaves a comment.

My issue is that when someone clicks the like button the the count associated with that like button stays the same and it acts as if nobody clicked it. I do get an email saying the button was clicked. I did a test and clicked a like button myself. When I did this, a wall post was made to my facebook wall showing I clicked the like button and I also got an email notification. However, the Like button count stayed at zero and it did not reflect that I Liked the article. I assumed there might be a lag before it is reflected so I have waited for sometime but there is still no update to the button status.

I would appreciate it if you could let me know what I should look for to try to resolve this issue. I sent you a PM with my site info as well as the article information I used for my test.

Thank you,

Mike

Thanks for sending the link by Private Message. Looking at that page, my best guess is that the og:image tag is causing issues. When looking at the Facebook Linter tool, Facebook is actually reporting that the page can't be reached:
developers.facebook.com/tools/lint

Since I can reach it, I don't think that's the problem, but obviously check to see if all of your pages are showing this. If other pages work, then look at the image tag on that page. JFBConnect is likely pulling the first article image, but it has spaces in the name, which isn't proper form for an Internet image. Can you try changing that image to not have spaces, and then use the linter again.

Hopefully, that's all there is to it, but if that doesn't work, just let us know. Also, can you tell me if this is the only (or one of a few pages on your site) with this issue, or is it on every single page?

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks for looking into this. The issue is occuring with all of the articles on my site. I had defined the default image to use under the Open Graph option in the Social configuration area. You were right that the image I had defined had a space in the name. I renamed the file so it did not have any spaces and updated the path in the Open Graph area to point to the renamed image file. When I used the linter tool it still could not access the page. I then clicked the Like button in the Linter tool and then entered the URL for the article again in the tool and this time it could access the page. However the Like count on my site still does not increment, even though the Like button in the Linter tool does. I did this for 3 other articles with the same results. Any suggestions for next steps?

Thanks,

Mike

Just wanted to follow up on my last post to see if you had any suggestions regarding next steps for troubleshooting this issue.

Thanks,

I'm honestly still not sure. We've scoured your page, used the linter, and checked the robots.txt file for any indicators that should say "don't crawl this site".

The one page you link above still doesn't work.. but the pages below work fine:
Lackland AFB Map: airmenfamilies.com/site/index.php?option...le&id=124&Itemid=463
Grad Week Overview: airmenfamilies.com/site/index.php?option...cle&id=70&Itemid=449

Really unsure why that one page (or some others) don't work.. we'll keep investigating, but if you see a pattern, please let us know as I don't have any perfect answers right now.

You may want to try disabling the Like notification email. We've never heard of any issues with that, but it's worth making sure that that's not interfering in some way.

Thanks Alex. I turned off the email notification for the Likes and low and behold it seems to have had an impact. After I turned it off I clicked on the Like button for one of the pages that I had tried previously (Band Flight article) and it is now working. I am not sure if it is just a conincidence but for that particular article it appears to now be working. If you think having administrator rights to look at the configuration settings of my site would be helpful, let me know and I will set you up with access and PM you the info. If I see any other possible causes I will let you know. Thanks for continuing to look into this for us.

Mike,
Not sure why that would be the cause, but I'd recommend leaving it off for now. We'll do a little more investigation to see if there's anything we could be doing wrong, but just watch to see if Likes are working. Then, possibly re-enable the email notification to see if things go wonky again.

Hopefully, that will narrow it down. It's always possible that Facebook was just having issues with your site for some reason, which does happen, and either way, hopefully, it's all cleared up now!
