With version 8, I had some problems with Facebook comments and likes. They were visible with Firefox and not with Safari or Chrome.  I had a look on the source with tre 3 browsers, and could not see a difference.
I downloaded the version 9 today, as I am preparing the migration to joomla 4.
problem 1: now I can see the comments and likes with Safari, but not with Firefox or Chrome. Strange...
problem 2: on "Where to include Comments" (or likes), I can select categories (I don't want to have them on all pages), but impossible to save it. I select 3 categories and after saving, 0 categories remain.
Any suggestion?

I just checked a sub-page of your site (/about-fr/a-propos-de-ce-site.html) and was able to see the Like buttons in Safari and Chrome.

The social buttons can show in some browsers and not others because of a few reasons:
* You are authenticated to Facebook in another tab. If there are restrictions on your Facebook Application, then logging into Facebook can actually prevent the Like button from showing as you may be in the wrong region, age group, etc to use the app. Try logging out of Facebook and testing again.
* Your browser could have privacy options set too high. These can prevent the Facebook Javascript from being loaded, which can prevent the buttons from showing.
* You are in Europe and GDPR applies. Facebook will not always show the like buttons unless the user has accepted all cookies. Even then, Facebook can still disable the buttons depending on the user's home country.
* You are *not* authenticated to Facebook. Similar to the above, being logged in can sometimes cause the buttons to work. Try logging into Facebook and testing again.

Finally, try using a 'private' window or from another computer altogether to see if the behavior changes.

If you can narrow things down more as to certain cases where the buttons do show and when they don't (usually not just by browser), that will really help us understand and dig into the issue (or clarify) further.

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks for your quick reaction.
As my primary goal is not to like my own video pages, I feel good with your answer which seems to mean others can see the buttons. This is the most important thing.
However, there was another issue related in my message:
In Sharing there is a possibility to select the pages whser buttons appear. In my case I just want them to appear on pages presenting videos.
I retried to include only 3 categories (--Vidéos (fr-FR), --Videos(en-EN) and --Videos(nl-NL), the dashes symbolising the heriearchy.
In first instance it did not seem to work (but I'm not sure, as the buttons don't always appear...). Next, I selected the same categories, but added the top of the hierarchy (Français (fr-FR), --Vidéos (fr-FR), etc) and it seems to work (but again, I'm not really sure...)
It would be much easier to manage the buttons if the selected categories were shown in the admin page.

I also noted that I don't see any button or comment on my smartphone. Is that also due to the fact the Facebook app is running? Or don't those items not appear on telephones?

A few months ago( this was with version 8), I disabled the comments as I could not make it work properly on smartphone with respect to responsiveness... The input field of the comment form exceeded the width of the page, breaking the whole layout of the site.
Now, as I don't see the buttons on my phone, I am not able to determine if my website has the same problem.

Anyway, thanks for your answer and keep the good job.

Jean-Marie

Please don't just take my word for it. Test with other configurations. I can see it, but perhaps I'm only one of a few because of how my computer is setup. I just don't want you to miss out on users/viewers. Also, concerning the EU, please check out the notice at the top of Facebook's Like button configuration page :

You may start to see some impact to Social Plugins due to an updated cookies consent prompt that will be shown to people using Facebook products in the European Region. We will no longer support the 'Like' and 'Comment' Social Plugins for European Region users, unless they are both 1) Logged into their Facebook account, and 2) have provided consent to the “App and Website Cookies” control.

There's more details in that link if you think that may be affecting your site/users as well.

Regarding the category selection, you're correct that there appears to be a bug with selecting categories. The result seems to be saved but not properly displayed when the page reloads again. We are investigating. Some notes:
* We do not automatically display buttons in sub-categories of parents. You should select all categories that you want the buttons to display in, just not the parent categories.
* You can select multiple categories by using the CTRL key and left-clicking on each category.

Again, we're investigating why the selections don't display properly and will let you know what we find (and put out an updated release as necessary).

Finally, for comments, please see the link above regarding European Union issues. Beyond that though, we do include some CSS which tries to make the Comment box responsive by setting it to 100% of the container it's in when the container is small (like in a mobile view). This works most of the time, but each template is different. If you can configure the comment box to show on a specific page and send us the link, we can look to see if it shows properly and possibly provide some CSS to help the looks in mobile.

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks for your reply.
To be sure the extension works properly, I added a Linkedin button. This one shows on all pages I configured to show social data sharing. So, the extension works properly.
I am not really sure I understand the whole story round the European Communauty rules.
My site is GDPR compliant and I have accepted cookies in all the 3 browsers.
If I understand correctly, there are 2 conditions which must be filled before the buttons appear: having accepted the cookies and being logged in on Facebook. If this is the case, I guess this function is unusable. Most people go on Facebook on their smartphone... not on the desktop in my opinion. And if they visit Facebook on their desktop, they rearely do it with all available browsers. I understand that people must be logged in Facebook before publishing the link, not while just looking at the site. If I remember how it was before, sharing an URL on Facebook first checks if you are logged in, and if not, you get the login screen. It makes no sense conditioning the display of a share or like button only for logged in users...

My website is based on a Helix template (not sure if it si Helix 3 or Helix Ultimante), and it displays the Helix-social-share.  I do not really like it, as I don't know how to configure the layout, thats why I looked at JFBConnect....
Strange thing is that the Fcebook buttons of Helix-Social-share show on all pages, also the ones the JFBConnect ones do not show... This is for me some kind of mystery, because as far as I can judge it, both have the same function... sharing a link to Facebook...

In annex, screenshots. 1 on Firefox and 1 on Safari. It concerns the same page: www.travel-video.info/en/videos/ellora-c...a-maharashtra-2.html
On Firefox, you can see all is OK. Linkedin and Facebook shares, comments (from JFBConnect) and Helix-social-share buttons
On Safari, only Linkedin (from JFBConnect) and all buttons from Helix-social-share buttons. And they work...

Best regards,

Jean_Marie

Unfortunately, I can't provide many more details about Facebook's requirements or implementation of those requirements. We completely agree it's a bit confusing and possibly not even useful how they have implemented things, but there's no way we can get around their requirements.

Facebook's "Sharing" feature is different than the Like Button. The Share button brings up a new window like your image, where a user can type a message and share to their feed. It's an 'explicit' action by the user and including the Share *link* on a page does not provide any information to Facebook.
The Facebook Like button, however, is implemented in Javascript, which can be used to store and read cookies and send details to Facebook about the visitor. That ability is what the GDPR is meant to prevent, which is why Facebook does not enable it for EU users.

In the "Sharing" section of JFBConnect, we have an enable switch for the "FB Share" button. Please try enabling that to see if it shows on your site and let us know.

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks for your answer. It makes sens...
I was looking for the switch for the "FB Share"button, but I could not find it...
But, when the Like button works, the "share"does it as well.
And when teh Like button does not appear, the "share" does not appear either.

That seems correct from my memory of it (I haven't tested to verify)... the 'Share' button that JFBConnect uses is an add-on option for the Like button. So, to have the share button, you must enable the Like button first and then the Like button can add on the Share button next to it.
